Russian League, Game 27: April 18, 2007
Defending champion CSKA Moscow edged Dynamo Moscow region 58-60 on the road Wednesday night to hold on to first place at the end of the Russian League regular season. Despite scoring only 3 points in the first 9 minutes of the fourth quarter, CSKA's defense remained tough to guarantee the win that saw the team finish the regular season at 21-3 – the same record as second place UNICS Kazan, which blew out last place Standart Samarskiy 109-67 in its finale. CSKA will now face eighth placed Spartak St. Petersburg in the quarterfinals, while Kazan faces Spartak VGUES. The other quarterfinals feature Dynamo Moscow against Lokomotiv Rostov and Khimki against Dynamo Moscow region. In Wednesday's other games, Khimki downed Rostov on the road 71-74, Ural Great beat Spartak St. Petersburg 81-68, Spartak VGUES defeated Sibirtelekom Lokomotiv 87-73 and CSK VVS-Samara overcame University Ugra Surgut 96-76.
CSKA continued its recent struggles on the road, but stepepd up its defense on the final possession to secure a key win at Dynamo Moscow region. In a game that was close throughout, CSKA led 31-36 at halftime and 45-53 after 30 minutes, but allowed the hosts back in the game down the stretch. But with the game on the line, the team's trademark defense won the game. Aleksey Savrasenko has 13 points and 8 rebounds, Oscar Torres added 12 and Theo Papaloukas finished with 9 points and 6 assists to lead CSKA.
Kazan built a 37-12 lead after 10 minutes on the way to overwhelming Standart. Jarod Stevenson scored 16 to lead seven Unics scorers in double figures. Sergey Chikalkin added 15, Yahor Mescharakov 14, Durjus Lavrinovic 13, while Saulius Stombergas, Ksystof Lavrinovic and Vadim Panin amassed 11 each for the big winners. Kevin Braswell paced Standart with 20. Maciej Lampe scored 15 to lead Khimki over Rostov on the road. Vitaliy Frizdon added 13 and Melvin Booker 10 for the visitors, who finished the season in third at 20-4.
