Italian League, Game 28: April 19, 2007
The Italian League has a regular season champion and the 2007-08 Euroleague has a new member, none other than Montepaschi Siena! Montepaschi mathematically won the Italian league regular season and therefore locked a spot in the 2007-08 Euroleague by thrashing Snaidero Cucine Udine 98-78 at home on Thursday night. Rimantas Kaukenas led the winners with 22 points, Vladimer Boisa added 20 and Romain Sato had 18 for Montepaschi. Mike Penberthy had 21 points for Udine. Lottomatica Roma stayed second now with a 19-10 record despite a 74-64 road loss against Tisettanta Cantu. Eldo Napoli is now fourth at 17-12 by beating Angelico Biella 79-67 at home on Thursday behind 16 points from Larry O'Bannon. Meanwhile, Upea Capo D'Orlando rallied from a 16-point deficit in the final 8 minutes to edge Benetton Treviso 72-70 behind 16 points from Alvin Young. Climamio Bologna dropped to 12-17 due to a 84-91 road loss against Bibop Carire Reggio Emilia. In other games, Premiata Montegranaro beat VidiVici Bologna 97-79, TDShop.it Livorno topped Whirlpool Varese 97-88, Legea Scafati edged Siviglia Wear Teramo 88-83 while Air Avellino upset Armani Jeans Milano 69-80.
Montepaschi Siena became the Italian league regular season winner and therefore locked a spot in the 2007-08 Euroleague by thrashing Snaidero Cucine Udine 98-78 at home on Thursday night. Montepaschi improved to 25-4 and locked the first place at the end of the regular season, sealing its Euroleague ticket for next season. Meanwhile, Udine dropped to 11-18. Rimantas Kaukenas led the winners with 22 points. Vladimer Boisa added 20, Romain Sato had 18, Joseph Forte 16 and Lonny Baxter 11 for Montepaschi. Mike Penberthy had 21 points for Udine, Jerome Allen added 16 and Joel Zacchetti 10. A three-pointer by Zacchetti gave Udine a 21-14 edge after 10 minutes, but Kaukenas and Boisa allowed Montepaschi to get a 49-40 halftime lead. Back-to-back triples by Forte and an outstanding Sato made Montepaschi break the game open, 73-54, late in the third quarter and Udine did not recover. Lottomatica Roma stayed second now with a 19-10 record despite a 74-64 road loss against Tisettanta Cantu. Casey Shaw paced the winners with 20 points. Luca Garri had 11 for Roma as its only player in double digits. Roma trailed 58-46 after 30 minutes and never came back.
Eldo Napoli is now fourth at 17-12 by beating Angelico Biella 79-67 at home on Thursday. Larry O'Bannon led the way for Eldo with 16 points. Michael Morandais and Matteo Malaventura each added 15 while Mason Rocca had 12 for the winners. Biella was withn 59-53 midway through the final period, but Morandais and Tyrone Ellis made the hosts boost their margin to 69-56 and never look back. Benetton is now 15th due to a 72-70 road loss against Upea Capo D'Orlando. Alvin Young paced the winners with 16 points. Spencer Nelson had 13 points for Benetton, Terrell Lyday 12, Preston Shumpert 11 and Marcus Goree 10. Benetton led 51-67 with 8 minutes to go but it just collapsed in offense, scoring 5 points in the final period. Young and Sotiris Gioulekas led the Capo D'Orlando comeback and helped the hosts to win in come-from-behind fashion. Climamio Bologna dropped to 12-17 due to a 84-91 road loss against Bibop Carire Reggio Emilia. Luis Flores paced the winners with 21 points. James Thomas had 17 points for Climamio, Stefano Mancinelli added 16 and Marco Belinelli 14. Reggio Emilia led 40-52 at halftime and even when Climamio got within 84-86 with 2 minutes to go, the hosts went scoreless right when it mattered.
