Italian Supercup: October 1, 2006
Marcus Goree - Benetton Benetton Treviso won the Italian Supercup by downing Eldo Napoli 76-73 at home in PalaVerde on Sunday night. Marcus Goree led the winners with 19 points and 15 rebounds while Richie Frahm and Terrell Lyday each had 13 for Benetton, whose former coach Mike D'Antoni, now coaching the Phoenix Suns, attended the game. Michel Morandais had 16 points for Napoli while Valerio Spinelli added 15. It was a balanced game in the early going, as a layup by Joey Beard, a triple by Simone Flamini and free throws by Mordente and Frahm fixed the score at 21-21 after 10 minutes. Napoli got a slim lead, 25-29, midway through the second quarter. It didn't last long, however, as Goree, Marco Mordente and Lyday fueled a 17-3 run which allowed Benetton to reach halftime with a nine-point lead, 43-34. Matteo Soragna stroke twice from downtown in the third quarter, while Goree kept dominating to boost Benetton's lead to 61-50 at the end of the third quarter. Goree dunked it and Frahm buried a triple to make it a 16-point game, 66-50. Napoli did not surrender, however, as free throws by Spinelli and Jay Larranaga brought their team within 68-63. Goree buried a triple and Lyday added a three-point play, but Morandais and Spinelli brought Napoli within 75-73 already in the final seconds. Goree drew a foul and made 1 of 2 from the line, while Morandais missed a three-pointer at the buzzer which would have sent the game into overtime.
