Italian League, Game 31: April 25-26, 2007
It was an interesting round in the Italian League, with a 12-hour, 5-game basketball marathon broadcast live on SkySports Italy on Wednesday. The Basket Day in Italy opened with Montepaschi Siena leaving no doubt about its power by thrashing Armani Jeans Milano 80-59 behind 20 points from Rimantas Kaukenas. Lottomatica Roma stayed second at 20-11 by edging Whirlpool Varese 82-81 at home on Wednesday. David Hawkins paced the winners with 24 points while Erazem Lorbek added 15 and 9 rebounds for Roma. Meanwhile, Benetton Treviso took a step forwards to get out of its difficult situation by downing Climamio 66-81 in Bologna on Wednesday night. Preston Shumpert led the winners with 30 points, 27 of them in the first half, as Benetton got a 31-53 lead and never looked back. Snaidero Cucine Udine improved to 13-18 by downing Eldo Napoli 88-96 on the road on Wednesday afternoon. Mike Penberthy paced the winners with 30 points on 5-of-7 three-pointers and 13-of-13 free throws. Ansu Sesay had 24 points for Eldo while Mason Rocca added 23 and 14 rebounds. In other games, VidiVici Bologna beat Angelico Biella 90-98, Tisettanta Cantu overwhelmed Air Avellino 83-49, Premiata Montegranaro topped Upea Capo d'Orlando 75-84 while Legea Scafati thrashed TDShop.it Livorno 110-83.
Montepaschi Siena stays unstoppable no matter what and improved to 27-4 by thrashing Armani Jeans Milano 80-59 on Wednesday morning. Kaukenas led the winners with 20 points, Joseph Forte added 18 and Terrell McIntyre 17 for Montepaschi. Both teams were tied at 38-38 after the first half, but Montepaschi limited its opponents to just 4 points in the next 13 minutes, boosting its margin to 60-42 to seal the outcome. Snaidero Cucine Udine improved to 13-18 by downing Eldo Napoli 88-96 on the road on Wednesday afternoon. Penberthy paced the winners with 30 points on 5-of-7 three-pointers and 13-of-13 free throws. Silvio Gigena added 19, Jerome Allen had 17, Jacob Jaacks 14 and Damon Williams 12. Sesay had 24 points for Eldo, Rocca posted a double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds while Jeff Trepagnier and Michel Morandais each added 10 for the hosts, who dropped to 17-14. Eldo led 80-78 midway through the final period, but Penberthy had other ideas in mind. He had 5 points in a 0-8 run that put Snaidero ahead for good and added 6 free throws to seal the win down the stretch.

Varese managed to get within 54-52, but a 8-0 run that Jon Stefansson capped with a wild triple allowed Roma to keep a 62-52 margin after 30 minutes. Roma led 80-72 with less than a minute to go and Varese managed to get minimum chances to win, but only got within 82-81 on a layup by Jack Galanda at the buzzer. Benetton Treviso took a step forwards to get out of its difficult situation by downing Climamio 66-81 in Bologna on Wednesday night. Shumpert led the winners with 30 points. Angelo Gigli had 12 points, Marcus Goree added 11 and Terrell Lyday 10 for Benetton. James Thomas posted a double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds for Climamio, that dropped to 13-18. Shumpert had 19 points in the opening quarter to give Benetton a 15-31 lead after 10 minutes, and had 8 more to boost the guests' lead to 31-53 at halftime. Benetton kept a double-digit lead all the way in the second half and cruised to an important road win.
