Baltic League, Game 1: September 29 - October 1, 2006
Defending Baltic League champion Lietuvos Rytas had no problems to open the season with a massive 93-63 home win against Panevezys. Joao Paolo Batista led the winners with 22 points, Andre Emmett added 14, Andrius Slezas had 12 and Marijonas Petravicius 11 for Rytas, in which center Eurelijus Zukauskas played his first official game in more than a year. Last year's runner-up Zalgiris Kaunas, needed to work hard to win its opener, 74-72 over Tallinn/Cramo on Saturday night. The hosts led much of the way, and managed to hold off a furious late comback from Tallinn. Marko Popovic led Zalgiris with a game-high 18 points. Paulius Jankunas added 13 while Tanoka Beard and Jonas Maciulis each had 10 for Zalgiris. Beard added 16 rebounds for a double-double. Ventspils needed a big fourth quarter to come back and top Panevezys 77-83. Panevezys built a double-digit advantage in the opening minutes and held on for a 45-35 hafftime lead. However the Latvian champs stormed back to outscore the hosts 10-24 in the last 10 minutes to secure the win. Justin Love paced the winners with 21 points, while Eddie Shannon had 20 points, 6 assists and 8 steals. Ventspils rounded a pefrcet weekend with a 62-84 road win against Atletas Kaunas. Dusan Jelic had 18 points and 15 rebounds for Ventspils. In other games, ASK Riga defeated Atletas 96-68 in its first Baltic League game behind Curtis Millage's 23 points, Tartu Rock beat Nevezys 77-71 behind 25 points on 7 of 9 triples from Gert Kullamae and Lacplesa Alus held off Barons Riga 68-65. On Friday, Donatas Zavackas had 26 points and 8 boards to lead Neptunas past Kalev/Cramo 98-97 and Siauliai scored a 73-87 road win at Sakalai.
