German League, Game 1: September 30 - October 1, 2006
The German League started with a big surprise, as Telekom Baskets Bonn downed Alba Berlin 73-85 in front of 7,364 fans at Max-Schmelling Halle. Jason Gardner led the winners with 22 points. Will Avery and Sharrod Ford each had 16 points for Alba, which trailed 33-49 at halftime and did not manage to recover. Defending champion RheinEnergie registered a 81-72 road loss against the Walter Tigers of Tubingen. Rasko Katic had 22 points for the Tigers while Demond Mallet and Marcus Faison each had 18 points for RheinEnergie, which led 48-53 after 30 minutes but could not escape with a win. The Deutsche Bank Skyliners rallied in the final period to edge Ratiopharm Ulm 73-72 due to a buzzer-beating by Eric Chatfield. In other games, the Bayer Giants Leverkusen beat New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig 95-83, the Artland Dragons topped Paderborn Baskets 84-71, Eisbaren Bremerhaven downed Nurnberg 77-68 while TBB Trier defeated EWE Baskets Oldenburg 75-66. BG Karlsruhe hosts EnBW Ludwigsburg on Monday, while Brose Baskets visits the Giessen 46ers on November 2.
