Russian League, Quarterfinals Games 1-2: April 27-28, 2007
CSKA Moscow, Unica Kazan and Dynamo Moscow all opened their best-of-five Russian League quarterfinal playoff series with a pair of wins, while Khimki Moscow and Dinamo Moscow Region split their games in the fourth series. Defending champ and regular season champ CSKA outclassed Spartak St. Petersburg 74-52 and 90-63; Kazan beat Spartak VGUES 87-70 and 84-74; and Dynamo Moscow bettered Lokomotiv-Rostov 67-57 and 78-60. Dinamo Moscow Region topped Khimki 78-88 in Game 1, but the hosts evened the series with an 82-77 overtime win.
CSKA outscored Spartak 16-8 in the opening quarter and went up 46-25 by halftime on the way to an easy win in the opener on Friday. David Andersen scored 16 off the bench, Zakhar Pashutin added 13 points and 8 rebounds, Trajan Langdon had 12 and Thomas Van den Spiegel 10. Theodoros Papaloukas stood tall with 17 points and 6 assists in Game 2 as the team raced out to 26-15 in the first period and coasted after that. Pashutin also had 17, Langdon 16 and Anton Ponkrashov 11. This was CSKA'slast game before heading to Athens for the Euroleague Final Four.
Ksistof Lavrinovic was the brightest star as Kazan took a 2-0 series lead. He led five Unics scorers in double figures with 20 points and 8 rebounds in Game 1. Saulius Stombergas added 15, Yahor Mescharakov 14, Jarod Stevenson 13 and Sergey Chikalkin 12 for the victors. Virgil Stanescu had a game -high 21 for Spartak. In Game 2, Lavrinovic had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Stombergas added 14 on the way to a 10-point win. Kazan led 69-50 after 30 minutes, but needed to hold off a Spartak comeback. Stanescu finished with 26 points and 10 boards in defeat.
Dynamo Moscow needed to turn it on late after the score was tied at 32-32 in Game 1 against Lokomotiv. Lazaros Papadopoulos controlled the paint for 17 points and 12 rebounds and Sergey Bykov added 15. Kreshimir Loncar had 13 for Rostov. Dynamo came out strong and dominated the first period 27-12 on the way to an easier win in Game 2. Bojan Popovic led the way with 16, Antonis Fotsis added 11 and Yuri Vasiliev 10.
Dinamo Moscow Region held on for a tough win in Game 1 as Fedor Likholitov led six Dinamo scorers in double figures with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Kelly McCarty led Khimki with 22 points and Maciej Lampe added 12. In Game 2, Khimki rallied from down 47-53 after 30 minutes to tie the game at 65-65 at the end of regulation before scoring the overtime win. Lampe had 21, McCarty 15, Melvin Booker 12 and Ruben Wolkowyski 10 for Khimki. Giedrius Gustas had 20 for Dinamo.
