Turkish League, Game 30: April 27-28, 2007
The Turkish League regular season came to an end over the weekend as Fenerbahce Ulker topped the standings by trashing Turk Telekom of Ankara on the road 65-81. Fener finished 28-2 – one victory more than second-place Efes Pilsen, which sent Tofas Bursa to the second division with an 86-74 victory. Bursa is joined by Tekel as the two relegated sides. Tekel bid farewell with a 78-93 to Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi. Galatasaray Cafe Crown finished fourth despite an 83-74 road loss to Oyak Renault, as Besiktas Cola Turka lost in overtime on the road at Banvit, 85-76. CASA TED Kolejliler placed sixth after beating Darussafaka 65-71. In other games, Beykoz outscored Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 105-91 and Alpella edged Pinar Karsiyaka 79-78. Three of the four best-of-five quarterfinal playoff series start with the home team leading 1-0 after sweeping the regular season meetings. They are: Fenerbahce Ulker vs. Darussafaka, Efes Pilsen vs. Banvit and Turk Telekom vs. CASA TED Kolejliler. The other series between Galatasaray and Besiktas starts at even ground.
Fenerbahce lost to Telekom 71-74 earlier this season, but took care of business this time as Will Solomon played the main role in a 7-25 start. Telekom responded with a 6-0 spurts in the last 3 minutes of the first quarter to end it at 13-25. Telekom went on to make it 25-29 midway through the second period, but Ibrahim Kutluay and Mirsad Turkcan stepped up with inside and outside points to gave a Fener 30-42 halftime lead. Solomon keep Fenerbahce rolling in the third quarter, which ended 54- 61, but Erwin Dudley and Jan Hendrik Jagla brought the hosts to within 61-63 early in the fourth. However Fenerbahce’s tough defense in the remaining minutes ended Telekom's chances. Omer Onan joined Solomon and Turkcan while Fenerbahce extended the lead minute by minute to snatch the comfortable away win. Solomon lead Fener with 27 points and 4 assists, Turkcan finished with a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds plus 5 assists, Onan had 11 points and Damir Mrsic made 8 for Fener. Dudley ended the game with 21 points and 8 rebounds and Jagla had 13 for Telekom.
Efes Pilsen remained in the second, but send Tofas to the second division by beating the Bursa team 86-74 at the Abdi Ipekci Arena. Drew Nicholas ended the hopes of the visitors with 7 three pointers in 10 tries, mostly in the second half. He finished with season-highs of 33 points and 9 assists. Ermal Kuqo had 14 points plus 8 boards, Marcus Haislip also nailed 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds plus 2 blocks for Efes. Tofas led 18-26 after 10 minutes and 37-39 at halftime, but wasn't able to stop Nicholas in the third quarter, as he scored 20 second-half points. Besiktas Cola Turka lost to Tadim Turkish Cup finalists Banvit 85-76 on the road in overtime. The game ended 73-73 at the end of regulation, but Arthur Long and Marque Perry dominated for Banvit in overtime. Long made a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, Perry had 18 points and 7 rebounds and Bekir Yarangume added 15 points. Erdal Bibo and Ivan McFarlin scored 19 for Besiktas, while Baris Ozcan had 16 and Levent Bilgin 14.
