Spanish League, Game 32: April 28-29, 2007
Real Madrid got closer to become the Spanish League regular season winner by edging Bruesa GBC 77-70 at home on Sunday morning behind 17 points and 9 rebounds from Axel Hervelle. An 11-0 run allowed Madrid to win the game down the stretch. Madrid will become the regular season winner if it beats DKV Joventut in Badalona on May 12. Tau Ceramica also improved to 25-8 and stayed second by thrashing Grupo Capitol Valladolid 103-89 in Vitoria also on Sunday. Luis Scola paced the winners with 23 points on 10-of-13 two-pointers and 7 assists. Meanwhile, Winterthur FC Barcelona stayed third and improved to 22-10 by thrashing Unicaja 68-51 at home on Sunday morning. Fran Vazquez led the winners with 18 points and 9 rebounds while Iñaki De Miguel had 14 for Unicaja. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas now ties for the fifth place at 19-13 by edging Akasvayu Girona 79-77 at home on Sunday. Sitapha Savane hit the game-winning free throws for Gran Canaria with 6 seconds remaining. DKV improved to 21-11 by downing Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 67-82 on the road on Saturday behind 16 points from Rudy Fernandez. In other games, ViveMenorca edged C.B. Granada 84-79, Pamesa Valencia bested MMT Estudiantes 91-70, Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket thrashed Caja San Fernando 73-96 while Polaris World CB Murcia beat Etosa Alicante 81-75.
Real Madrid stayed atop the standings with a 25-8 record by edging Bruesa GBC 77-70 at home on Sunday morning. Hervelle led the winners with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Louis Bullock added 14 points, Charles Smith had 13 and Blagota Sekulic 11 for Madrid. Bruesa led 66-68 midway through the final period, but Bullock and Marko Tomas combined for 9 points in an 11-0 run that sealed the outcome. Tau Ceramica also improved to 25-8 and stayed second by thrashing Grupo Capitol Valladolid 103-89 in Vitoria also on Sunday. Scola paced the winners with 23 points on 10-of-13 two-pointers and 7 assists. Tiago Splitter added 15 points, Fred House had 14 and Igor Rakocevic 13 in an easy home win for Tau. Scola, Zoran Planinic and Pablo Prigioni led Tau to a 39-25 lead after 10 minutes. Tau boosted its margin to 69-40 at halftime and never looked back. DKV Joventut improved to 21-11 by downing Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 67-82 on the road on Saturday. Fernandez paced the winners with 16 points. Marcelinho Huertas added 11 while Dimitri Flis had 10 for Joventut, that led 12-22 after 10 minutes and never trailed. In fact, a basket Andy Betts made it a 17-point game, 44-61, enough for Joventut to seal the win.
Winterthur FC Barcelona showed it is ready to battle for the Spanish League title by thrashing Unicaja 68-51 at home on Sunday morning. Barcelona improved to 22-10 while Unicaja dropped to 17-16. Vazquez led the winners with 18 points and 9 rebounds, while Roger Grimau added 11 for Barcelona. De Miguel had 14 points for Unicaja while Carlos Cabezas added 12. Both teams were tied at 15-15 early in the second quarter, but Vazquez had 8 points in a 10-0 run that broke the game open, 25-15. A basket by Grimau made it a 12-point game, 33-21, at halftime. Barcelona boosted its margin to 40-21 but De Miguel singlehandedly gave Unicaja some hope, 42-34. It didn't last long, however, as Barcelona extended its lead to 56-38 with 6 minutes to go and cruised to a well-deserved win. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas now ties for the fifth place at 19-13 by edging Akasvayu Girona 79-77 at home on Sunday. The game was delayed for several hours to Girona's late arrival to the Canary Islands. Kornel David led the winners with 17 points while Roberto Guerra and Marcus Norris each had 15 for Gran Canaria. Marc Gasol had 16 points for Akasvayu, that did not lead in the final period but managed to tie the game, 77-77, with a minute to go. Savane drew a foul with 6 seconds remaining and made both free throws while Marko Marinovic missed a game-winning three-point shot at the buzzer.
