Israeli League, Game 21: April 29-30, 2007
Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv kept its momentum with an 80-95 road win Monday at Bnei Hasharon after the hosts led by 7 at halftime. Meanwhile Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem suffered a shocking home loss to lowly Ironi Ashkelon 89-111. In other action around the league Givat Shmuel changed coaches this week and appointed Ami Nawi in hope to save the season. In his first game on the road at Afula, the change proved itself as Givat Shmuel won 88-95. Jayson Straight was in a zone on his way to 39 points including 7 hits from 10 three-point shots. Jermaine Hall led Gilboa/Afula with 23 points and Tunji Awojobi added 22. Galil Elyon's run is still on after a 111-89 home win over Ironi Ramat Gan. Galil used a 32-13 second quarter to decide the game and dominated the boards 43-25. Kenny Adeleke led Galil with 22 points making all of his nine shots from the field and 11 rebounds. Omri Casspi added 17 points and 6 rebounds. Darryl Wilson led the losing side with 34 points. Ironi Nahariya fell from fourth place after a 73-80 loss to Rishon Lezion. The visitors arrived with a nine-game losing streak and were down by 18 in the second quarter, but a great team effort and and huge finish by Itay Lev made the difference for Rishon.
Maccabi, without an injured Tal Burstein, arrived to Bnei Hasharon with momentum after a big win over rival Hapoel last week, but things didn't start so smooth. Maccabi was down by 7 after 20 minutes, but had a big second half, both on offense and defense, on the way to a 80-95 win. Lee Nailon scored 11 points in the first quarter, but Yotam Halperin and Will Bynum matched him to finish the quarter tied at 23-23. Nailon calmed down, but Jason Williams came off the bench and Ousmane Cisse carried Bnei Hasharon to a 49-42 halftime lead. Halperin nailed a big three-pointer to tie the game at 55-55 and from that point on Maccabi was on top of its game. Bnei Hasharon scored only 9 points in the third, Yaniv Green provided good minutes off the bench, and after a three by Sharon Shason, Maccabi held a 58-67 lead at the end of the third. Shason added a layup to give Maccabi its first double-digit lead of the night, and when Goran Jeretin scored from long range, Maccabi capped a 6-24 run. Bynum, Shason and Jeretin continued to carry Maccabi as the margin increased to 67-89 on the way to victory. Bynum led Maccabi with 21 points and 6 assists, Halperin added 13 with 7 rebounds while Jeretin and Shason scored 11 each. Williams led Bnei Hasharon with 17 points and Nailon finished with a total of 15, as did Cisse, who added 10 rebounds.
The last game between Hapoel and Ashkelon finished after no less than six overtimes in favor of Hapoel. Ashkelon set a different kind of record this time, scoring 52 points in the second period on the way to an 89-111 upset.. It was Hapoel that was hot from the start and took a 27-19 lead after 10 minutes, but Or Eitan and Marcus Hatten took over the game in the second period in which their team was unstoppable. Hatten had 6 points at the end of the first quarter but starting the second quarter he was on fire. Ashkelon started to pour it on and then Jerusalem's Jurica Golemac was ejected, as the visitors raced to 42-71. Hatten, who ended his second quarter show with a three-pointer, had 24 in the period. Ashkelon crossed the 30-point gap early in the second half before Hapoel finally woke up. Hatten was held to a single point in the next 10 minutes as Hapoel came back to 68-89 with a quarter to play. Hapoel chipped away some more, but never threatened the final result. DeMarco Johnson and Ricardo Marsh put Ashkelon past the 100-point line and Ashkelon coasted to victory. Hatten finished with 37 points and Marsh and Johnson scored 17 each while Hapoel got 19 points from both Horace Jenkins and Mario Austin.
