Spanish League, Game 33: April 25 - May 4, 2007
Everything is ready for the Spanish League playoffs, as Real Madrid, Tau Ceramica, DKV Joventut, Winterthur FC Barcelona, Akasvayu Girona, Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas, Pamesa Valencia and Unicaja will keep fighting for the league title. Real Madrid showed its power by downing Tau Ceramica 80-68 at home in front of 11,200 fans on April 25 behind 20 points from Charles Smith. DKV Joventut is now third at 22-11 by edging GBC Bruesa 66-72 on the road on Thursday. Rudy Fernandez led the winners with 18 points. Winterthur FC Barcelona dropped to 22-11 and is now fourth due to a 75-68 road loss against CB Granada. Joventut will be third if it beats Real Madrid this weekend, while the guests will clinch first place with a win. Unicaja improved to 17-15 and eventually clinched a playoff spot by thrashing Polaris World CB Murcia 93-76 in Malaga also on Wednesday, April 25, while Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas keeps tying for the fifth place at 79-83 by edging Grupo Capitol Valladolid 79-83 on the road on Wednesday.
ULEB Cup champion Real Madrid showed its power by downing Tau Ceramica 80-68 at home in front of 11,200 fans on April 25 and is back atop the Spanish League standings. Both teams tie for the first place in the standings at 24-8, but Madrid will win the regular season if it wins its two remaining games in this phase. Smith led the winners with 20 points, Axel Hervelle and Marko Tomas each added 12 while Felipe Reyes had 11 for Madrid. Igor Rakocevic had 21 points for Tau while Luis Scola posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Madrid used a 14-3 run that Smith capped with a big basket to get a 24-13 lead after 10 minutes. Tau did not give up, however, as Tiago Splitter scored to get the guests within 28-26. Alex Munbru and Axel Hervelle stepped up to give Madrid a 38-30 halftime edge. Tau trailed all the way in the second half but got within 60-56 on a put-back basket by Scola. Smith fired in back-to-back triples and Edu Hernandez-Sonseca added 4 critical points, as Madrid boosted its margin to 75-64 and never looked back. Unicaja improved to 17-15 by thrashing Polaris World CB Murcia 93-76 in Malaga also on Wednesday, April 25. Carlos Jimenez and Carlos Cabezas led the winners each with 13 points, Berni Rodriguez and Jiri Welsch added 11 apiece while Marcus Faison had 10 in an easy home win for Unicaja, that led 28-17 after 10 minutes, boosted its margin to 71-52 after 30 minutes and rest its main players in the final period.
DKV Joventut is now third at 22-11 by edging GBC Bruesa 66-72 on the road on Thursday. Fernandez led the winners with 18 points. Elmer Bennett added 12 while Robert Archibald posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for Joventut. Fernandez helped Joventut to get a 29-39 halftime lead, and the guests held off the hosts' second-half rally to escape with a win. Winterthur FC Barcelona dropped to 22-11 and is now fourth due to a 75-68 road loss against CB Granada. Jesus Fernandez paced the winners with 25 points on 12-of-18 shooting and 7 rebounds. Juan Carlos Navarro had 20 points for Barcelona while Denis Marconato added 13 for the guests. Fernandez and Scott Padgett helped Granada to seal the outcome in the final minutes. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas keeps tying for the fifth place at 79-83 by edging Grupo Capitol Valladolid 79-83 on the road on Wednesday. Jimmie Hunter led the way for Gran Canaria with 18 points, Jackson Vroman added 17 while Roberto Guerra had 12 for the winners. Gran Canaria led 67-76 after three quarters and managed to escape with a valuable road win.
