Belgian League, Game 36: May 9, 2007
An intense 36th and final round in the Belgian-League regular season on Wednesday set up a pair of interesting playoff matchups. Spirou Charleroi finished atop the standings with a a 25-11 mark and will face Euphony Bree in the first round of the playoffs. Bree looked likely to take on Telindus Oostende, but a surprising loss on Wednesday to last-placed Basket Gr Leuven dropped Bree to fourth and allowed recent Belgian Cup winners Sanex Antwerp G to climb into third. Antwerp will now face Oostende in the semifinals beginning next Wednesday. Spirou finished the regular season with a 106-95 loss at Okapi Aalstar. The visitors led 48-49 at halftime, but Aalstar used a 31-18 third quarter to surge ahead for good. Adam Hall was the star with 31 points and 11 rebounds, while Tremmell Darden led Charleroi with 18. Oostende defeated Verviers-Pepinster 77-89 on the road to clinch second. Coach Sharon Drucker's team led 45-54 at halftime, but the hosts stormed back in the middle of the third quarter. However Telindus finished the period with a 2-13 spurt to take control for good. Eric Hicksand Titus Ivory scored 16 apiece to lead Oostende. Antwerp topped Dexia Mons-Hainaut 79-67 as David Toya came off the bench for 17 and Dwayne Archbold added 16 for the winners. Kevin Houston led Mons with 20 points and 12 rebounds, Bingo Merriex added 15 and Jim Potter scored 11. Leuven edged Bree 69-66 in its last game before dropping to the second division. Ian Hanavan had 15 points and 11 boards for Leuven, while Kelvin Tolbert posted 16 for Bree. In the night's other game, Michael Campbell scored 21 for R Atomia Brussels in an 85-74 win over Liege Basket.
