Italian League, Game 33: May 9, 2007
Everything can happen with one game to go in the Italian League regular season, where only one thing is for certain: Montepaschi Siena is the regular season champion and earned a spot in the 2007-08 Euroleague. Montepaschi Siena improved to 29-4 by thrashing Legea Scafati 84-103 on the road on Wednesday. Romain Sato led the winners with 24 points on 3-of-3 three-pointers while Rimantas Kaukenas added 20 for Montepaschi. Lottomatica Roma stayed second at 22-11 by downing Air Avellino 87-64 at home also on Wednesday behind 21 points from Mire Chatman. Benetton Treviso keeps climbing in the standings by thrashing TDShop.it Livorno 90-64 at home also on Wednesday. Preston Shumpert paced the winners with 25 points. Mike Penberthy had 27 points on 7-of-11 three-pointers to lead Snaidero Cucine Udine to a 78-83 road win against Climamio, while Eldo Napoli stayed fifth with a 18-15 record by edging Tisettanta Cantu 76-82 on the road on Wednesday behind 24 points from Mason Rocca. In other games, Armani Jeans Milano downed Bibop Carire Reggio Emilia 68-83, Siviglia Wear Teramo edged VidiVici Bologna 91-87, Whirlpool Varese beat Upea Capo d'Orlando 86-75 while Angelico Biella topped Premiata Montegranaro 88-87 in overtime.
Montepaschi Siena improved to 29-4 and keeps breaking its own records by thrashing Legea Scafati 84-103 on the road on Wednesday. Sato led the winners with 24 points on 3-of-3 three-pointers. Kaukenas added 20, Joseph Forte had 17, Terrell McIntyre 13 and Shaun Stonerook 10 for Montepaschi, that led 74-77 with 8 minutes to go. Kaukenas and Sato fueled a 0-8 run that broke the game open, 74-85. Forte, Vladimer Boisa and Sato stroke from downtown to seal the win in style. Benetton Treviso keeps climbing in the standings by thrashing TDShop.it Livorno 90-64 at home also on Wednesday. Shumpert paced the winners with 25 points. Marcus Goree added 14, Nikos Zisis had 13 and Matteo Soragna 12 for Benetton, that broke the game in the second half and did not find much trouble to register another home win. Lottomatica Roma stayed second at 22-11 by downing Air Avellino 87-64 at home also on Wednesday. Chatman paced the winners with 21 points, Alex Righetti added 13, David Hawkins had 11 and Dejan Bodiroga 10 for Roma, that led 37-36 at halftime. A 15-0 run that Hawkins capped with a dunk broke the game open after the break.
Eldo Napoli stayed fifth with a 18-15 record by edging Tisettanta Cantu 76-82 on the road on Wednesday. Rocca led the way for Napoli with 24 points, Michel Morandais added 16 while Tyrone Ellis had 11 for Eldo, that led 63-68 midway through the final period. Rocca, Morandais and Dimitris Marmarinos allowed Eldo to keep a slim lead until the final buzzer. Snaidero Udine improved to 15-18 by downing Climamio Bologna 78-83 on the road on Wednesday. Mike Penberthy paced the winners with 27 points on 7-of-11 three-pointers. Damon Williams added 13, Michele Antonutti had 12 and Silvio Gigena 10 for Snaidero. Stefano Mancinelli had 16 points for Climamio, Alain Digbeu and Tyus Edney each added 11 while Goran Jurak got 20 for the hosts. The game saw as many as 16 lead changes until Penberthy hit back-to-back triples for a 61-67 Snaidero edge with 8 minutes to go. Climamio did not give up and got a 76-75 edge but Jerome Allen, Antonutti and Penberthy combined for 8 of 8 free throws to seal the win for Snaidero down the stretch.
