Italian League, Game 34: May 13, 2007
Rimantas Kaukenas - Montepaschi The Italian League regular season came to an end on Sunday with some surprises, as last year's finalists Climamio Bologna and Benetton Treviso did not make the playoffs. Montepaschi Siena finished the regular season first - and clinched a Euroleague spot - with an incredible 30-4 record by thrashing Climamio 106-87 at home behind 24 points from Rimantas Kaukenas. James Thomas posted a huge double-double of 23 points and 22 rebounds for Climamio. Armani Jeans Milano finished second at 22-12 by edging Lottomatica Roma 69-59 at home. Both teams joined a three-way tie for the second place, but Milano was second, VidiVici Bologna third and Roma fourth. Meanwhile, Eldo Napoli finished fifth with a 19-15 record by edging Benetton Treviso 95-85 at home. Michel Morandais led the way for Eldo with 34 points on 5-of-7 triples and 11-of-11 free throws. Snaidero Cucine Udine finished 12th at 15-19 due to a 79-83 home loss against Legea Scafati. In other games, Angelico Biella overwhelmed Air Avellino 65-93, VidiVici Bologna edged Whirlpool Varese 97-93 in overtime, Upea Capo d'Orlando beat Bipop Carire R.Emilia 76-71, Siviglia Wear Teramo topped Premiata Montegranaro 83-89 while Tisettanta Cantu bested TDShop.it Livorno 83-90. The playoff matchups will be Montepaschi - Cantu, Lottomatica - Eldo, VidiVici - Biella and Milano - Varese.

Montepaschi Siena ended the Italian League regular season with an incredible 30-4 record by thrashing Climamio Bologna 106-87 at home. Kaukenas paced the winners with 24 points in just 23 minutes. Terrell McIntyre and Joseph Forte each added 17, Lonny Baxter had 13 while Romain Sato and Shaun Stonerook got 12 apiece for Montepaschi. Goran Jurak led Climamio with 26 points, Thomas posted a huge double-double of 23 points and 22 rebounds, Alain Digbeu had 11 points and Tyus Edney 10 for the guests, who finished the regular season with a 13-21 record. Jurak, Thomas and Stefano Mancinelli kept Climamio in the game, 50-50, for 19 minutes. Kaukenas, McIntyre and an outstanding Forte allowed Montepaschi to break the game open, 87-73, after three quarters and Climamio never recovered. Armani Jeans Milano finished second at 22-12 by edging Lottomatica Roma 69-59 at home. Both teams joined a three-way tie for the second place, but Milano was second, VidiVivi Bologna third and Roma fourth. Danilo Gallinari led the way for Milano with 18 points. David Hawkins had 15 points for Roma while Erazem Lorbek added 11. It all came down to the final three minutes, as back-to-back baskets by Dejan Bodiroga and Hawkins tied it at 59-59. Kiwane Garris and Massimo Bulleri led a final 10-0 run that helped Milano to get a key win.

Eldo Napoli finished fifth with a 19-15 record by edging Benetton Treviso 95-85 at home. Morandais led the way for Eldo with 34 points on 5-of-7 triples and 11-of-11 free throws. Ansu Sesay added 20 while Tyrone Ellis had 18 for Napoli. Marco Mordente led Benetton with 22 points on 4-of-4 triples and 8-of-8 free throws. Matteo Soragna added 20, Marcus Goree 16 and Preston Shumpert 10 for Benetton, that is out of the playoff race. Napoli opened the game with a 15-4 run and an outstanding Morandais allowed the hosts to boost their lead up to 63-40 midway through the third quarter. Soragna led the Benetton comeback, as the guests cut their margin to 70-60 after three quarters and then again to 84-80 with less than 3 minutes to go. Morandais followed free throws with a key triple while Ellis dunked it to seal the Eldo win in style. Snaidero Cucine Udine finished 12th at 15-19 due to a 79-83 home loss against Legea Scafati. Rick Apodaca led the way for Scafati with 20 points. Jerome Allen had 22 points for Snaidero, Silvio Gigena added 15 and Damon Williams 10. Udine almost rallied from a 13-point deficit in the final period, as a triple by Gigena got the hosts within 79-81. Apodaca drew a foul and calmly made free throws to make Scafati seal the win down the stretch.
