Russian League playoffs, Semifinals Game 1: May 16, 2007
CSKA Moscow and Unics Kazan earned respective wins in Game 1 as the Russian-League semifinals got underway on Wednesday. CSKA topped cross-town rival Dynamo 84-75, while Kazan beat Khimki Moscow 86-72. CSKA left it till late before storming past Dynamo, the other Russian representative in the Euroleague this season. The hosts held a narrow 24-21 lead after 10 minutes and were up just 41-40 at halftime. Then Dynamo went ahead, building a 15-point lead before finishing the third quarter with a 56-62 cushion. But CSKA regrouped and with Theodoros Papaloukas and Matjaz Smodis carrying the defending champs, CSKA outscored Dynamo 28-13 in the last 10 minutes to record the victory. Papaloukas finished with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in just 22 minutes, Smodis had 20 points and Trajan Langdon added 12. Eddie Gill led Dynamo with 16 points, Dimitri Domano added 15, Antonis Fotsis 13 and Sergey Monya had 11. Meanwhile Unics went ahead early and held on to beat Khimki. The hosts led 26-20 at the end of the first quarter, increased the lead by one points more until halftime and then put it away in the last period. Sergey Chikalkin led the way with 15 points, Jerry McCullough added 14, Darjus Lavrinovic 13, Yahor Meshcharnakou 11 and Dusko Savanovic 10. Kelly McCarty had a game-high 21 for Khimki, while Maciej Lampe posted 11 and Vladimir Dyachok 10 in defeat. Games 2 in both series are on Thursday.
