Slovenian League playoffs, Semifinals, Game 1: May 16, 2007
Domen Lorbek - Olimpija Union Olimpija Ljubljana and Helios Domzale started the Slovenian League semifinals on the right foot Wednesday with respective wins. Olimpija edged Geoplin Slovan 84-80, while Domzale used a big third quarter to sprint past Zlatorog 87-75. Domen Lorbek sank a pair of free throws with 6 seconds remaining to ice Olimpija's win. The hosts led for much of the game, but Slovan was never out of the picture. However Olimpija looked to have the game under control when Sandi Cebular's free throws made it 78-67 with 3 minutes to go. However Davor Marcelic almost single-handedly carried Slovan back and and then Gasper Vidmar's three-point play brought the visitors within 2 points with 18 seconds remaining. But Olimpija managed the clock well and had a cool Lorbek on the line at the right time to win it. Lorbek, who was 5-of-8 from downtown, led Ljubljana with 20 points, Ivica Jurkovic added 15 and Marko Rakocevic 14. Marcelic finished with a game-high 26 for Slovan. Meanwhile, six different scorers were accounted for during a 14-4 third-quarter run as Helios built a 15-point lead and hung on for a Game 1 win. Zlatorog cut the gap to 7 early in the fourth, but baskets by Smiljan Pavic and Aleksej Lashkevich took care of business for the hosts. Ziga Zagorc led Helios with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Pavic added 15. Zan Vrecko posted 18 for Zlatorog in defeat. Both series resume on Saturday with Game 2.
