Spanish League quarterfinals, Game 1: May 17-18, 2007
The Spanish League quarterfinals started without surprised, as all four home teams won their respective games and took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five series. Real Madrid had to battle for all 40 minutes to edge Pamesa Valencia 84-81 at home on Thursday. Louis Bullock led the winners with 17 points, Charles Smith added 16 while Ruben Douglas had 15 points to lead 5 Pamesa players in double digits. Free throws by Bullock and Kerem Tunceri allowed Madrid to win the game. DKV Joventut survived a tough battle by edging Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas 75-73 on Friday on a game-winning six-meter jumper by Elmer Bennett, who became the game hero. Rudy Fernandez led the winners with 14 points while Snap Hunter had 22 for Gran Canaria. Winterthr FC Barcelona got closer to advance to the semifinals by downing Akasvayu Girona 80-69 at home on Friday behind 21 points on 7-of-10 triples from Jaka Lakovic. Meanwhile, Igor Rakocevic shined with 33 points on 8-of-9 three-pointers and 7-of-7 free throws in just 21 minutes to lead Tau to a huge 92-65 home win against Unicaja. Game 2 will be here this weekend.
Real Madrid got a 1-0 lead in its quarterfinal series by edging Pamesa Valencia 84-81 at home on Thursday. Bullock led the winners with 17 points. Smith added 16 while Felipe Reyes and Alex Mumbru each had 14 for Real Madrid. Douglas had 15 points for Pamesa, that hosts Game 2 this Sunday. Vule Avdalovic and Albert Oliver each added 13, Victor Claver got 12 and Albert Miralles 10. Reyes and Bullock allowed Madrid to get a 22-19 edge after 10 minutes, while a 8-0 run that Raul Lopez capped with a basket boosted the hosts' lead to 34-25. Mumbru and a red hot Bullock made Madrid get a double-digit halftime lead, 47-37. The hosts' margin peaked at 58-43, but Pamesa was not done, as a 0-10 run that Claver capped with a corner triple gave the guests a 64-66 edge already in the final period. Douglas hit one from downtown to give Pamesa its last lead, 80-81. Bullock made free throws, Axel Hervelle had a critical block on Ruben Garces while Kerem Tunceri hit 2 more from the line for a 84-81 edge with a second to go. Mindaugas Timinskas managed to get a three-point shot, but was way off-target. Tau also got a 1-0 lead by thrashing Unicaja 92-65 in Vitoria on Friday. Rakocevic paced the winners with 33 points on 8-of-9 three-pointers and 7-of-7 free throws in just 21 minutes. Tiago Splitter added 17 while Luis Scola had 11 for Tau. Marcus Brown had 18 points for Unicaja while Carlos Jimenez added 14. Rakocevic had 10 points in 3 minutes to make Tau get a 48-33 halftime lead and fired as many as 5 triples in the third quarter to seal the win, 81-48, after 30 minutes.
Winterthur FC Barcelona took a 1-0 lead in its best-of-five quarterfinal series by downing Akasvayu Girona 80-69 at home on Friday. The series move now to Girona for Game 2. Lakovic led the winners with 21 points on 7-of-10 triples, Juan Carlos Navarro added 16 while Roko-Leni Ukic had 11 for Barcelona. Fernando San Emeterio and Gregor Fucka each had 15 points for Akasvayu, that led 28-32 midway through the second quarter. Ukic stepped up to help Barcelona to get a 39-36 halftime edge. Navarro and Denis Marconato made Barcelona boost its margin to 61-51 after 30 minutes and the hosts managed to get a safe margin all the way in the final period. DKV Joventut had to battle hard to edge Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas 75-73 on Friday. Joventut took a 1-0 lead in the series, that now travel to the Canary Islands for Game 2. Fernandez paced the winners with 14 points, Andy Betts added 13 and Marcelinho Huertas 10, but Bennett became the game hero with two key baskets down the stretch. Hunter had 22 points for Gran Canaria while Jackson Vroman added 12. Gran Canaria led 53-60 late in the third quarter, but went scoreless for almost 6 minutes. Meanwhile, Joventut used a 14-0 run to get a seven-point lead, 67-60. Hunter hit back-to-back triples while a free throws by Vroman tied it at 71-71 with 40 seconds to go. Bennett hit an off-balanced shot that Roberto Guerra erased with a floating layup for a 73-73 tie with 7 seconds remaining. Bennett hit the game-winning jumper from the top of the key with less than a second remaining.
