German League playoffs, Quarterfinals, Game 1: May 20-21, 2007
The Artland Dragons provided the biggest surprise in the German League quarterfinals opener by edging Alba 86-87 in Berlin on Sunday. Tommy Smith paced the winners with 19 points, but Filiberto Rivera was the Dragons' hero with the game-winning layup. Will Avery had 19 points for Alba, Julius Jenkins added 16 and Sharrod Ford 15. Jenkins gave Alba its last lead, 86-85, with 40 seconds remaining, but Rivera scored with 20 seconds to go and the hosts failed the score in the game's most important possession. RheinEnergie needed to battle hard to edge Eisbaren Bremenhaven 60-61 on the road in Game 1 of their best-of-five quarterfinal series. Immanuel McElroy led the defending champion with 14 points, while Demond Mallet and Devin Green each added 12 for RheinEnergie. The game went down to the wire, as McElroy sealed the outcome, 57-61, with 18 seconds to go. EnBW Ludwigsburg had less trouble to thrash Bayer Giants Leverkusen 89-59 at home behind 21 points from Jerry Green. On Monday, Telekom Baskets Bonn used a defensive show to top Brose Baskets Bamberg 58-69. The visitors held Brose Baskets to 7 second-quarter points as they took a 23-34 halftime lead, which stood the test of the second half. Bamberg suffered from an awful shooting night, going 5-for-25 from downtown (20%) and making just 15-of-33 free throws (45.5%). Jason Conley led Bonn with 19 points and 11 rebounds, John Bowler added 13 and Jason Gardner 10. Casey Jacobsen paced Brose Baskets with 20 points and 8 boards.
