Israeli League, Game 26: May 20-21, 2007
Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv and Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem recorded easy home wins in the Israeli League on Sunday, but the real story of the round's games was Galil Elyon's 99-100 win at Ironi Nahariya that put coach Oded Katash's team into fourth place. Galil can clinch the last remaining spot in the Israeli Final Four with a win or a Nahariya loss in the last regular-season games on Thursday. That ticket will earn the team a matchup with perennial champion Maccabi Tel Aviv in the semifinals. Maccabi beat Ironi Ramat Gan 101-90, while Hapoel sent Givat Shmuel to the second division with a 91-72 victory on Sunday. Galil started strong behind youngsters Yogev Ohayon and Omri Casspi and led 16-31 after 10 minutes. Nahariya veteran Barak Peleg carried his team back to 44-45 at halftime. Sasa Ocokoljic helped Nahariya to a 9-84 lead in the fourth quarter, but Ohayon, Tre Simmons and Sasa Bratic put Galil on top 95-97 in the last minute. Nahariya tied the game twice and with 8 seconds to go, sent Ohayon to the line. He scored the first and missed the second, but that was still enough for the win after Nahariya lost the last ball. Simmons led Galil with 27 points and Ohayon had 24 points and 8 assists. Ocokoljic scored a 20 points and Peleg 19 for Nahariya. In other games, Bnei HaSharon beat Gilboa/Afula at home 84-82 behind Lee Nailon's 26 points and Ricardo Marsh scored 26 as Ashkelon topped Rishon Lezion 86-76 to retian its spot in the top league.
Maccabi rested Nikola Vujcic, but still managed to score more than 100 points and beat Ironi Ramat Gan 101-90. Ramat Gan used the absence of Vujcic to take an early 5-14 lead, but Maccabi answered with its own run to finish the first quarter down 27-28. Tal Burstein and Yotam Halperin stepped up for Maccabi in the second quarter, but Ramat Gan used points by Rob Brown and Darryl Wilson to stay within 55-54 at halftime. Simas Jasaitis heated up and Yaniv Green flashed some moves in the post to make it 83-75 after 30 minutes. Ramat Gan stayed within 90-85 with 6 minutes to play, but Halperin made sure no upset will take place and secured the 11-point win. Halperin finished with 26 points and 5 steals to lead Maccabi. Green added 14 points and 7 rebounds, Jaime Arnold had 12, Jasaitis and Burstein scored 11 each. For Ramat Gan, Moran Roth had 19, Wilson 18 and Brown 17.
Hapoel bounced back from a 17-point loss at Afula last week with a 91-72 win over Givat Shmuel, which was officially relegated after Ashkelon won 24 hours later. Hapoel led 27-20 after 10 minutes, but it was Givat Shmuel that was up at halftime 42-43. Hapoel ran 9-0 to take the lead back in the third period, but Givat Shmuel didn't let go. Meir Tapiro and Dror Hagag took care of business for the hosts as the teams entered the deciding quarter with Hapoel up 63-60. Just in time, Hapoel's stepped its defense up. Timmy Bowers joined Tapiro in stopping Givat Shmuel on 12 points the entire last quarter as Jerusalem marched to a 19-point win. Terrence Morris finished with 18 points, Bowers added 17, Tapiro 16, Mario Austin added 14 and Hagag finished with 13. Reggie Moore led Givat Shmuel with 31 points.
