Slovenian League Finals, Game 1: May 26, 2007
Smiljan Pavic - Helios Domzale Helios Domzale took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five Slovenian League finals by edging Union Olimpija 76-74 at home in Game 1 on Saturday. Olimpija hosts Game 2 in Ljubljana on Thursday, May 31. Former Olimpija center Smiljan Pavic paced the winners with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Ziga Zagorc added 16 points while Sasas Doncic had 10 for Helios. Tyrell Lee had 18 poinrts for Olimpija, Domen Lorbek added 16 while Slavko Duscak got 13 for the guests, who were without injured stars Teemu Rannikko and Manu Markoshvili. Rannikko may see some playing time in games to come, but Markoishvili is out for the season. Duscak and Lee led a 0-8 run that allowed Olimpija to get a 19-24 edge after 10 minutes. Pavic and Zagorc allowed Helios to get a double-digit margin, 46-35, early in the third quarter. Olimpija did not surrender and improved its defense to regain the lead, 64-70, midway through the final period. A 10-2 run that Doncic capped with free throws gave Helios a 74-72 edge with 28 seconds remaining. Lorbek hit free throws to tie it at 74-74 with 16 seconds to go, but Aljaz Janza drew a final with no time on the clock and calmly made foul shots to make Helios win the game and get closer to win the Slovenian League title.
