Spanish League Quarterfinals, Game 4: May 26-27, 2007
Real Madrid and Winterthur FC Barcelona joined Tau Ceramica in the Spanish League semifinals, as both teams won their respective best-of-five quarterfinal series against Pamesa Valencia and Akasvayu Girona 3-1. Real Madrid advanced to the semifinals by edging Pamesa Valencia 80-83 in Game 4 on the road on Saturday. Charles Smith and Axel Hervelle paced the winners each with 19 points while Felipe Reyes added 13 for Real Madrid. Free throws by Reyes and Louis Bullock sealed the win in the final 8 seconds. Meanwhile, Winterthur FC Barcelona thrashed Akasvayu 75-90 in Girona on Sunday behind 17 points from Michalis Kakiouzis. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas managed to overcome a do-or-die situation by edging DKV Joventut 74-71 in overtime in Game 4 to tie the series at 2-2. Joventut hosts do-or-die Game 5 in Badalona on Tuesday. Snap Hunter led the winners with 23 points but Sitapha Savane became the game hero by hitting the game-tying free throws at the end of regulation. Rudy Fernandez led Joventut with 23 points.
Real Madrid advanced to the semifinals by edging Pamesa Valencia 80-83 on the road on Saturday to win the best-of-five quarterfinals series 3-1. Smith and Hervelle paced the winners each with 19 points while Reyes added 13 for Real Madrid. Ruben Douglas had 18 points for Pamesa, Albert Oliver added 16, Vule Avdalovic 15 while Ruben Garces posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds for the hosts. Pamesa shutted down Smith and Bullock in the first half, as an outstanding Avdalovic helped the hosts to get a 45-33 margin late in the second quarter. Free throws by Smith and Alex Mumbru got Madird within 45-37 at halftime. Madrid needed just 50 seconds to get back into the game after the break, 45-44. The game turned into an incredible battle in which every possession counted. Oliver gave Pamesa a 77-73 edge with less than 3 minutes to go, but a 0-6 run that Bullock capped with an acrobatic layup gave Madrid a 77-79 edge. Albert Miralles and Oliver made 3 of 4 free throws to give Pamesa its last lead, 80-79, but Reyes and Bullock did not miss from the foul line in the final 8 seconds to make Madrid advance to the next round.
Winterthur FC Barcelona advanced to the semifinals by downing Akasvayu 75-90 in Girona in Game 4 on Sunday night. Barcelona won the series 3-1 and will face Tau Ceramica in the next round. Kakiouzis led the winners with 17 points. Jaka Lakovic had 16, Gianluca Basile added 14, Denis Marconato 13 and Juan Carlos Navarro 11. Arriel McDonald led all scorers with 23 points for Akasvayu. Fran Vazquez and Basile shined in the opening quarter to give Barcelona a 14-19 cushion after 10 minutes. A three-pointer by Kakiouzis boosted the guests' margin to double digits, 20-31, midway through the second quarter and Barcelona controlled the game from that moment. A triple by Basile and free throws by Lakovic helped Barcelona to keep a 36-43 halftime lead. Lakovic, Marconato and Navarro boosted the guests' lead to 40-56 in the third quarter and Girona did not recover. Kakiouzis followed a basket with a three-point play while a three-pointer by Navarro sealed the outcome of the series, 55-72.
Gran Canaria needed overtime to stay alive in the competition by edging DKV Joventut 74-71 in overtime in Game 4 on Sunday morning in dramatic fashion. Series are tied at 2-2 but Joventut hosts Game 5 on Tuesday. Hunter led the winners with 23 points but Savane became the game hero by hitting the game-tying free throws at the end of regulation. Jackson Vroman added 13 points while Kornel David had 10 for Gran Canaria. Fernandez led Joventut with 23 points while Lubos Barton added 12. Fernandez had 4 points in a 0-6 run that allowed Joventut to get a 29-32 edge at halftime, and then he followed a triple with free throws to give Joventut its biggest margin, 40-52, late in the third quarter. An unstoppable Hunter singlehandedly brought Gran Canaria back into the game, while a three-pointer by Roberto Guerra gave the hosts a 63-62 edge with 2 minutes to go in regulation. Free throws by Barton and Bennett gave Joventut a 63-65 edge, but Savane drew a foul and hit foul shots with no time left in regulation, 65-65. It all came down to the final minute of the extra period, as David made free throws for a 74-71 Gran Canaria edge. Bennett, Barton, Ferran LaviƱa and Paco Vazquez missed three-point shots in the final minute.
