Russian League Finals, Game 2: May 28, 2007
CSKA got within one win of lifting its fifth consecutive Russian League title - would also be its 14th since the competition was created in 1992 - by downing Unics Kazan 70-58 in Game 2 of the best-of-five title series on Monday. CSKA has a 2-0 lead in the series but Unics hosts Game 3 in Kazan on Thursday. Matjaz Smodis led the winners with 16 points, Theo Papaloukas added 15 while Aleksey Savrasenko had 10 for CSKA. Darjus Lavrinovic had 15 points for Unics with his twin brother Ksystof and Yahor Meshcharakou each got 10 for the guests. J.R. Holden and Savrasenko led CSKA in the early going, while the hosts extended their margin to 19-13 late in the first quarter. A buzzer-beating basket by Ksystof Lavrinovic ignited the Unics comeback, as a fallaway jumper by Sergei Chikalkin put the guests ahead, 19-20, after 12 minutes. Papaloukas returned to the floor and he soon delivered with a triple in a 7-0 run that gave CSKA a 27-22 lead. Meshcharakou and Darjus Lavrinovic kept Unics close, 29-28. A three-pointer by Smodis and a jumper by Trajan Langdon allowed CSKA to stay ahead, 36-33, at halftime. Unics went scoreless in the opening 3 minutes of the third quarter, as a three-point play by Smodis gave CSKA a 41-33 edge. Unics called timeout at 49-40 and found its go-to guys in Ksystof Lavrinovic and Meshcharakou, that got the guests within 54-48 after 30 minutes. Unics did not surrender, however, as Jarod Stevenson hit one from downtown to get Unics within 55-53 with 7 minutes remaining. As usual, Papaloukas rescued CSKA with another triple and a turnaround jumper, enough for his team to extend its lead to 64-56 with 3 minutes to go and seal the outcome.
