CSKA celebrates fifth straight Russian Title, photo: cskabasket.com Showing the team play that has made it one of Europe's top teams all decade, CSKA Moscow is once again the Russian League champion! CSKA won its fifth consecutive Russian League crown, its 14th since the Russian League was created in 1992 and its 38th counting Soviet Union titles by sweeping its best-of-five title series against Unics Kazan by 3-0. CSKA edged Unics 71-78 in Kazan in Game 3 on Thursday, enough to finish yet another successful season in which the team also won the Russian Cup and made it to the Euroleague title game. Trajan Langdon led the winners with 19 points while hitting 4 of 9 three-point shots. David Andersen added 15 points while Matjaz Smodis had 13 for CSKA. Ksystof Lavrinovic had 20 points for Unics, his twin brother Darjus added 15. Jarod Stevenson put in an additional 12 points and Jerry McCullough 10 for the hosts. Unics had led at intervals throughout the game, but CSKA managed to keep a slim lead all the way through the final period until free throws by J.R. Holden and Smodis sealed the outcome.

Trajan Langdon - CSKA MoscowLangdon had 7 points in a 4-9 run for CSKA in the opening 3 minutes, but Unics found a go-to guy in Ksystof Lavrinovic, who stroked 3 triples from downtown and added a three-point basket-plus-free throw. Those dozen points filled most of a 14-2 run that allowed Unics to take a 27-20 lead after 10 minutes. Lavrinovic stayed on fire early in the second quarter but Smodis and Langdon also scored from downtown to put CSKA back ahead, 29-30. Stevenson and Darjus Lavrinovic stepped up for Unics, but a layup-plus-free throw by Langdon kept CSKA ahead, 37-38, after 16 minutes. Three-pointers by Darjus Lavrinovic and Langdon fixed the halftime score at 42-44. The game turned into an physical battle after the break and Unics made the most of it to move ahead 48-47. CSKA hit back as Langdon hit a corner triple, Andersen added a short jumper and Thomas Van den Spiegel buried free throws. A layup by Theo Papaloukas capped the surge by giving CSKA a 58-60 edge after 30 minutes. Smodis and Aleksey Savrasenko pushed CSKA further ahead, 62-66, with 7 minutes to go. Free throws by Papaloukas and a three-pointer by J.R. Holden extended CSKA's lead to 64-71 with 4 minutes remaining. Unics never recovered, as it committed too many turnovers down the stretch. Free throws by Holden and Smodis assured that CSKA could celebrate yet another Russian League title!
