Slovenian League Finals, Game 2: May 31, 2007
Ivica Jurkovic - Union Olimpija Injury-plagued Union Olimpija evened the best-of-five Slovenian League finals at 1-1 by outlasting Helios Domzale 87-86 at home in Ljubljana with some timely free throw shooting down the stretch. It marked the second close game of the series after Helios won the opener in Domzale by a basket. Game 3 goes back to Domzale on Saturday. Olimpija had to make 5 of 6 free throws in the last 12 seconds - including two each by Miha Zupan and Domen Lorbek - to escape a late rally by Helios. With starting perimeter players Teemu Rannikko and Manuchar Markoishvili still out, Olimpija was led by Ivica Jurkovic, who poured in 29 points. Tyrell Lee followed him with 15 and Marko Rakocevic with 11, while Zupan finished with 9 and 6 rebounds. Ziga Zagorac paced Helios with 22 points, including 3 free throws in the next-to-last minute that brought his team back. Robert Troja followed him with 14 points, while Dario Krejic had 11 and Smiljan Pavic 10 plus 8 rebounds. Helios had led 14-18 early, but Olimpija used a 12-4 blast to finish the first quarter ahead by 26-22. The Olimpija advantage reached 37-31 in the second quarter on a basket by Zupan, before Pavic and Jurkovic combined on the last 5 points before halftime for a 45-36 scoreboard at the break. Despite the efforts of Helios, Olimpija pushed the lead to double digits, 56-45, on Lee's bucket midway through the third quarter, which ended with the hosts fully in charge at 66-53. Or so it seemed. Helios scored the first 7 points of the final quarter, and after a triple by Lee, the next 5 again, to make it a game at 69-65 with 6 minutes left. It was a battle the rest of the way, and Troha's free throws made it 85-84 with 7 seconds left before Lorbek answered with the game winners at the line.
