French League Final: June 2, 2007
Chorale Roanne is the French League champion! Roanne won its second French League title, its first one since 1959, and earned the right to play the 2007-08 Euroleague by beating Sluc Basket Nancy 74-81 in the title game in front of 14,500 fans at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy on Saturday. As such, Roanne completed a dream season, as the team also won the Semaine Des As title, showing it was the best team in French basketball this year. Marc Salyers led the winners with 27 points and 8 rebounds. Dewarick Spencer had 13 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, Pape Badiane added 11 points and 12 rebounds while Aaron Harper also posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds for Roanne. Maxime Zianveni had 21 points for Nancy, Cyril Julian added 15 while Tariq Kirksay scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the regular season champion. Spencer had 7 points in a 2-12 final run that allowed Roanne to add a historical win!
Cerdick Banks, Branko Milisavljevic and an dominant Dan McClintock combined for 19 points in a 23-7 opening run for Nancy, as Roanne tried to get Spencer involved without much success. Salyers stepped up to get Roanne within 24-14 after 10 minutes, and then followed a triple with a put-back layup to make it a five-point game, 28-23, midway through the second quarter. Julian took over with 6 unanswered points in an 11-0 run that he capped with a free throw for a 39-23 Nancy margin. Salyers and Badiane brought Roanne back to life, 39-30, at halftime. Three-pointers by Marc-Antoine Pellin, Spencer and Harper allowed Roanne to get its first lead of the game, 41-44, right after the break. Badiane dunked it twice and an outstanding Salyers added a triple to keep Roanne ahead, 47-52. Zianveni and Kirksay fueled a 10-2 run that put Nancy back ahead, 57-54, after 30 minutes. Salyers finally got some help from Spencer right when it mattered, as his layup tied it at 63-63 with 7 minutes to go. A three-pointer by Zianveni gave Nancy some air, 70-65, but Badiane and Spencer brought Roanne within 70-69. Laurent Cazalon and Spencer hit consecutive three-pointer to put Roanne ahead for good, 72-75. Salyers dunked it while Spencer followed a layup with free throws to seal the outcome and allow all Roanne fans in Bercy to celebrate that their team was the new French League champion!
