Greek League Finals, Game 1: June 6, 2007
Euroleague champion Panathinaikos took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five Greek League finals by edging Olympiacos 79-72 in Game 1 at the OAKA arena on Wednesday. As such, Panathinaikos is two wins away from reaching the ultimate goal: its first-ever Triple Crown - Greek League, Greek Cup and Euroleague titles in the same season. Sani Becirovic led the winners with 14 points and 5 assists. Kostas Tsartsaris and Ramunas Siskauskas added 12 points apiece while Dejan Tomasevic had 10 points for the Greens. Scoonie Penn led Olympiacos with 21 points on 8-of-8 free throws. Henry Domercant added 16 while Giannis Bouroussis posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Panathinaikos took advantage of its advantage against Penn in the low post, as Becirovic constantly scored in the paint and due to this the Greens got a 44-34 halftime margin. The hosts soared up to 59-42 after 28 minutes, but Olympiacos managed to cut its deficit to 74-68. Tsartsaris stepped up in crunch time to lead Panathinaikos to a well-deserved win. Olympiacos hosts Game 2 this weekend.
Meanwhile, Aris downed Panionios 84-82 to take a 1-0 lead in the third place playoff and got closer to clinch a Euroleague berth. Terrell Castle led the winners with 20 points, Alex Scales had 16, Savvas Iliadis and Mike Wilkinson added 11 apiece, with the latter also grabbing 8 boards while Giannis Giannoulis and Dimitris Tsaldaris each got 10 points. Kennedy Winston had 24 points for Panionios, that led 34-44 at halftime. Aris managed to rally in the second half while Castle sealed the win from the free throw line.
