French League Game 4, October 7-8, 2006
Adecco Asvel held off a late Hyères-Toulon charge Sunday to win 79-82 and join Roanne atop the French League with 4-0 records. Asvel, which was coming off a 90-115 exhibition defeat against the San Antonio Spurs as part of NBA Europe Live, used a 21-2 first-half run to take control, but fount itself in a dog fight when Hyères-Toulon closed to within a basket late in the fourth quarter. Rowan Barrett drained four 3s on his way to 20 points and Brian Greene added 18 for Asvel. On Saturday, Nancy overcame Clermont 75-63 to also remain undefeated, albeit with one less game played. One of the most exciting games of the weekend saw Pau-Orthez drop an overtime decision to Gravelines-Dunkirk, 80-83. Paccelis Morlende had 18 points and 4 assists for Gravelines, which handed Pau its second straight defeat. C.C. Harrison led five Pau players in double figures with 16, while Ricardo Greer came through with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Meanwhile, Le Mans wound up on the wrong end of a nail-biter as Orleans scored a 62-59 win at the buzzer. Benjamin Dewar's triple left no room for doubt at the end of a fourth quarter that saw five lead changes and three ties. Terrence Dials led Orleans with a 14-points, 7-rebound sowing, while Eric Campbell paced the defending champs with 17 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Pope-Philippe Amagou's 14 points. Also Saturday, Strasbourg couldn't hang on at the of a close one and fell 76-74 to Besancon. Roanne got big efforts from Aaron Harper and Dewarick Spencer as it bested Reims 93-74. In other games, Bourg got its first win of the season, 64-68, at Paris's expense, Dijon defeated Le Havre 72-67 and Chalon/Saône defeated Cholet 67-73.
Asvel led by as many as 26 after a Rowan Barrett 3 late in the second period and was up 22-46 at halftime. The lead would peak at 33 early in the second half, however Hyères-Toulon reeled off 10 unanswered points to end the third period and continued to outplay the visitors until the gap was 74-76 with two minutes remaining. But another Barrett triple and a pair of Greene free throws were enough to secure Asvel's fourth win of the season. Barrett finished with 20, Greene 18 and Amara Sy 14 for Asvel. Brian Brown scored 20 in defeat. Pau dropped to 1-3 despite holding a 67-58 advantage with three minutes to go. Paccelis Morlende capped a late comeback to tie the game at 69-69 in the closing seconds and Rickey Paulding came through for the visitors in the extra period with a momentum-changing dunk and then a 3-pointer that gave Gravelines the lead for good. Morlende scored 18 points and dished 4 assists for Gravelines, while Paulding added 12 points and 7 boards. C.C. Harrison led Pau with 16, followed by Britton Johnsen's 15, Ricardo Greer and John Gilchrist with 14 apiece and Ian Mahinmi added 10 points and 6 rebounds. LeMans slipped to 1-3 on Dewar's buzzer-beater in Orleans. Terrence Dials led Orleans with 14 points and 7 rebounds and Jermaine Boyette added 12. For LeMans, Eric Campbell was good for 17 points and 13 rebounds, Pope-Philippe Amagou had 14 points, Kenny Gregory 13 and Nebojsa Bogavac 12. Besancon had the last laugh in a topsy-turvy win over Strasbourg,76-74. Cory Bradford's 21 points and 6 assists combined with John Ford's 20 points and 10 rebounds led Besancon. A pair of Nissim triples in the last two minutes gave the visitors hope, but Bradford made a free throw in the waning seconds to ice the win. Afik Nissim paced Strasbourg with 20 points and 5 assists, while Gauthier Darrigand added 15 and Michael Smith and Chuck Eidson chipped in 10 each. Cyril Julian stood out with 23 points and 17 rebounds as Nancy topped Clermont 75-63. Cedrick Banks added 15, Tariq Kirksay 13 points and 9 assists, John Linehan 11 and Victor Samnick 10. Larry Owens led Clermont with 17.
