German League Game 2: October 6-8, 2006
RheinEnergie Köln set the pace from the start as it defeated TBB Trier 80-59 Sunday in its home opener in the German League. The hosts took control with a 19-11 first quarter and led 39-25 by halftime on the way to their first win of the season to improve to 1-1. Robert Burrell led all scorers with 20 points, Demond Mallet added 14 and Marcin Gortat had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Alba Berlin was also a big winner in its game on Saturday, putting ratiopharm Ulm away 66-87. After a fairly close first half, which ended with Berlin up 40-46, the visitors outscored their opponents by 7 in the third quarter and 8 in the fourth to improve to 2-1. William Avery paced the team with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Sharrod Ford added 16, Ruben Boumtje Boumtje 14 and Demond Greene 10. Jonathan Levy led Ulm with 15. EnBW Ludwigsburg, which trounced Giessen 46ers 104-56; Telekom Baskets Bonn, which overcame Bayer Giants Leverkusen 78-64; Artland Dragons, which bested sellbytel Baskets Nürnberg 73-81; and Deutsche Bank Slykiners, which beat EWE Baskets Oldenburg 70-80 all improved to 2-0 and share first place in the league. In other games, Paderborn Baskets scored a 77-54 win over Walter Tigers Tübingen and BG Karlsruhe topped New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig 81-85. Brose Baskets will conclude the round when it faces Eisbären Bremerhaven on Monday.
