Russian League, Game 1: October 9-11, 2006
The Russian League has started without CSKA, still busy with its NBA Europe Live appearances in Moscow and Cologne. The first round provided a major upset, as Spartak Vgues edged Dynamo Moscow 70-69 in Primorie on Monday. Willie Deane had 16 points to lead the winners while Virgil Stanescu added 15. Travis Hansen had 21 points on 6 of 9 triples for Dynamo, Dmitry Domani added 15 and Lazaros Papadopoulos 10. It all came down to the final minute, as Hansen fired in a triple for a 67-69 Dynamo edfe but Andrei Sepelev answered from downtown to win the game at the buzzer. Spartak Vgues kept shocking everyone with a 79-78 home win against Khimki on Wednesday behind 20 points from Deane. Ruben Wolkowyski had 23 points for Khimki, Vitaliy Fridzon added 11 while Oscar Torres and Vladimir Dyachok each scored 10 points for the guests. Spartak rallied from a 15-point deficit in the final period and Stanescu won it with a big dunk in the final seconds. Dynamo improved to 1-1 by beating Sibirtelekom 76-84 in Novosibirsk on Wednesday. Papadopoulos led the way with 23 points on 9-for-11 shooting while Hansen added 14. In other games, University Surgut topped Standart 98-83 behind 27 points from Denis Ershov, Unics Kazan beat Samara 75-60 behind 24 points and 14 rebounds from Darjus Lavrinovic while Dynamo Moscow Region downed Spartak St. Petersburg 81-73.
