Spanish League, Game 3: October 11-12, 2006
Real Madrid remained atop the Spanish League standings by thrashing ViveMenorca 107-78 at home on Thursday morning. Felipe Reyes led six Madrid players in double figures with 16 points. Charles Smith added 15 while Axel Hervelle and Louis Bullock each had 13 in an easy win for Madrid. Meanwhile, Tau also improved to 3-0 by defeating Polaris World CB Murcia 81-65 in Vitoria. Mirza Teletovic and Kaya Peker led the winners each with 21 points while Igor Rakocevic had 16 for Tau, which broke the game early in the fourth quarter. Winterthur FC Barcelona got its first win by thrashing Pamesa Valencia 83-60 in Barcelona on Thursday. Fran Vazquez paced the winners with 17 points. Joventut Badalona topped Estudiantes 84-78 behind 14 apiece from Rudy Fernandez and Lubos Barton. Unicaja bounced back from a pair of losses by downing Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 92-79 behind 18 points from Berni Rodrguez, while Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas dropped to 1-2 with a 58-43 road defeat at Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada. In other games, Caja San Fernando beat Etosa Alicante 77-82, Akasvayu Girona topped Bruesa GBC 85-98, and C.B. Granada defeated Grupo Capitol Valladolid 83-96 on the road behind 27 points from Samo Udrih.
Real Madrid stays unstoppable so far and leads the standings with a 3-0 record by thrashing ViveMenorca 107-78 at home on Thursday morning. Reyes led 6 Madrid players in double digits with 16 points. Smith added 15, Hervelle and Bullock each had 13 while Marko Tomas and Alex Mumbru scored 10 points apiece for the winners. Madrid led 21-17 after 10 minutes while a three-pointer by Raul Lopez helped the hosts to extend their margin to 46-33 at halftime. Bullock and Smith exploded after the break, as Madrid boosted its lead to 75-58 after three quarters and never looked back. Tau Ceramica also improved to 3-0 by defeating Polaris World CB Murcia 81-65 in Vitoria. Teletovic and Peker led the winners each with 21 points while Rakocevic had 16 for Tau, which only had a 57-53 lead after 30 minutes. Rakocevic and Teletovic combined for all points in a 8-0 opening run in the final period, while once again Teletovic had 9 points in the final 7 minutes to lead Tau to a well-deserved win. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas dropped to 1-2 due to a 58-43 road loss against Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada. Tom Wideman had 11 points for Fuenlabrada and was the only player in this game to score in double digits. Gran Canaria were limited to just 2 points in the second quarter, as Fuenlabrada got a 30-15 halftime lead and kept a safe margin until the final buzzer, limiting its opponent to just 16-for-54 shooting.
Unicaja got its first Spanish League win of the season by downing Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 92-79. Rodriguez led the winners with 18 points. Kostas Vasileadis added 15 while Carlos Cabezas and Florent Pietrus each had 14 for Unicaja. Martin Rancik had 20 points for Bilbao but will miss the next two months due to a wrist injury. Bilbao led 37-38 at halftime but Rodriguez and Vasileadis allowed Unicaja to get a 61-57 edge at the end of the third quarter. Cabezas and Pietrus combined for 22 points in the final period to seal the win long before the final buzzer, while a triple by Vasileadis finished it in style. Winterthur FCB had less troubles than expected to defeat Pamesa Valencia 83-60 at home on Thursday night. Fran Vazquez led the winners with 17 points, Mario Kasun added 14, Roko-Leni Ukic had 11 and Jaka Lakovic 10 for Barcelona, who limited Dejan Milojevic of Pamesa to just 4 points tonight. Lakovic and an outstanding Vazquez led a 26-8 opening run which allowed Barcelona to keep full control of the game until the final buzzer. Joventut remained undefeated at home after holding off a spirited challenge from Estudiantes. Rudy Fernandez and Lubos Barton scored 14 each, Ferran Laviña added 11, Andrew Sullivan 10 and Charles Gained finished with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Goran Nikolic led Estudiantes with 19, Gonzalo Martínez had 14, Will McDonald 12 and Hernan Jasen 10.
