French League, Game 5: October 14-15, 2006
Cyril Julian Adecco Asvel became the only team unbeaten atop the French League standings by edging previously undefeated Roanne 81-77 at home on Saturday. Laurent Foirest led the winners with 19 points, but Brian Greene became the game hero by hitting 4 of 4 free throws in the final minute to make Asvel improve to 5-0. Greene had 14 points, Vincent Masingue and Yohann Sangare each added 13 while Chevon Troutman scored 10 points for Asvel. Dewarick Spencer had 26 points for Roanne, which rallied in the last five minutes to tie it at 77-77 with under 2 minutes to go. Greene made 4 free throws to make Asvel win the game. Nancy improved to 4-1 by edging Strasbourg 79-84 on the road on Sunday. Cedrick Banks was the man of the game with 36 points on 7 of 12 three-pointers. Victor Samnick added 13 points, Tariq Kirksay added 12 and Dan McClintock 11. Claude Marquis had 20 points for Strasbourg, Aerick Sanders added 12 and 17 rebounds while Michael Smith also had 12 points for the hosts, who led 76-71 midway through the final period. Banks stepped up with 9 points, including 2 critical triples, in a final 3-13 run which sealed the win for Nancy. Chalon improved to 4-1 by downing Le Mans 99-104 in double overtime on the road also on Saturday. Former Le Mans playmaker Jermaine Guice led the winners with 30 points. Kenny Gregory had 26 points for Le Mans, Eric Campbell added 20, Pape Philippe Amagou 18, Nebojsa Bogavac 16 and Frederic Adjiwanou 10. Bogavac made free throws at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime, 81-81, while Geoff Lear hit foul shots to force a second overtime, 94-94. Back-to-back triples by Willem Laure and Guice allowed Chalon to win the thriller. Pau-Orthez dropped to 1-4 due to a 70-66 road loss against Bourg. Britton Johnsen had 17 points for Pau, which trailed almost all the way. In other games, Hyeres-Toulon upset Orleans 79-85, Dijon beat Clermont 64-75, Le Havre topped Cholet 73-61, Gravelines thrashed Besancon 86-62 while Paris beat Reims 68-76.
