Polish League, Game 1: October 11-15, 2006
The Polish League tipped-off this weekend with defending champion Prokom Trefl Sopot edging newcomer Kager Gdynia 81-83. The hosts were just seconds from earning a sensational victory, holding an 81-78 lead with 40 seconds remaining. But Filip Dylewicz tied things with a triple and Rashid Atkins gave Prokom the lead with a jumper with 15 seconds to go. Kager had a chance to tie, but came up empty. Dylewicz was Prokom's star on the night, making all 8 field goal attempts on the way to 20 points. Justin Hamilton added 13, Atkins 11 and Donatas Slanina 10. Gintaras Kadziulis led Kager with 24 points. Andrzej Pluta shined in Anwil Wloclawek's 74-81 road win over another debutant, Znicz Jaroslaw. Pluta's 35 points made the shooting guard the top scorer of the weekend. Forwards Dusan Bocevski and Gatis Jahovics added 10 points each for Anwil, while Mark Dickel was good for 7 points and 8 assists. Tony Atkins led hosts with 30 points and 6 assists. Turow Zgorzelec outlasted Bergson Slask Wroclaw 67-64.thanks to Lukasz Koszarek's long 3-pointer with 40 second on the clock. Koszarek led Turow with 18 points, while Robert Witka added 16. Aleksander Dimitrowski had 21 for Slask, but missed a 10-meter attempt at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime. Energa Czarni Slupsk never trailed on its way to a 74-70 win against Polpharma Starogard Gdanski. Miah Davis had 19 for Czarni, while Polpharma's Kamil Zakrzewski led all scorers with 20. A pair of late Arturs Brunins triples led Stal Ostrow to a 77-83 victory over Polonia Warsaw. Brunins finished with 17 and Antonio Hudson a game-high 26. In other games, Grzegorz Arabas scored 21 points and Jarett Howell added 20 in Kotwica's away 72-86 victory over AZS Koszalin and Polpak Swiecie thrashed Unia Tarnow 69-40 behind Harding Nana's 14 points and 12 rebounds.
