Greek League, Game 2: October 18, 2006
A1 Olympias of Patras provided the biggest surprise in the Greek League so far by edging mighty Panathinaikos 68-67 at home in Game 2 of the regular season. Steven Burtt paced the winners with 24 points. Dimitris Diamantidis had 15 points for Panathinaikos, Nikos Hatzivrettas added 11 and Tony Delk 10 for the Greens, who their 24-game winning streak disappear, since its last Greek League defeat came against PAOK on February 15. Panathinaikos trailed 36-27 late in the second quarter but a 0-8 run broughr the Greens within 36-35. An outstanding Diamantidis allowed Panathinaikos to get a 50-57 margin with 6 minutes to go, but Burtt turned the game into a one-man show and allowed his team to get a 68-67 edge with 4 seconds to go. Hatzivrettas missed the last shot, enough for all Olimpias fans to celebrate the biggest win in club history. Olympiacos improved to 2-0 by downing Panellinios 84-71 at home. Alex Acker led the way for the Reds with 19 points, Panos Vasilopoulos added 18, former Panellinios player Damir Mulaomerovic had 15 and Ryan Stack 11 for Olympiacos, which kept a slim lead all the way, while Acker and Mulaomerovic shined to break the game for good in the final period. Mike Wilkinson led the winners with 16 points, Spyros Panteliadis had 14 and Jeremiah Massey 13 for Aris, which led 43-34 at halftime. Maroussi rallied and got a 65-67 edge with 22 seconds to go. Massey stepped up with the game-winning basket-plus-foul, but Panteliadis committed a foul with 0.3 seconds to go. Chris Thomas missed twice from the foul line, allowing Aris to win the game. Panionios thrashed PAOK 90-72 on the road behind 20 points from Andre Hutson, while AEK dropped to 1-1 due to a 90-97 home loss against Apollon Axaia despite 27 points on 11-for-14 shooting from Nestoras Kommatos.
