Portuguese League, Game 1: October 28-29, 2006
The Portuguese League started this weekend with nine teams fighting for the title. Sport Lisboa e Benfica became the first leader of the competition by thrashing Casino Figueira Ginasio 83-65 in Lisbon on Saturday. Corey Benjamin led the winners with 18 points, Ashante Johnson added 15 and Ian Stanback had 14 for Benfica. Ricky Woods had 24 points for Ginasio, which trailed 48-26 at halftime and never recovered. Lusitania Angra PM edged Belenenses Hyundai Lusifor 100-95 to join the four-way tie atop the standings. Willie Taylor led the way with 27 points, Graham Brown added 21 and Mike Williams 14 for Lusitania. Brian Robinson had 30 points for Belenenses, which led 29-35 after 10 minutes but trailed all the way in the second half. Ovarense Aerosoles started to defend its Portuguese League title by beating Barreirense 75-88 on the road. Cordell Henry paced the winners with 32 points off the bench, 21 of them in the final period. Shawn Jackson added 11 points while Gregory Stempin grabbed 14 rebounds for Ovarense. Henry had 9 unanswered points in the final period which made it a 12-point game, 60-72, allowed Ovarense to break the game down the stretch. In the final game of the opening round, CAB Madeira edged Queluz Sintra PM 70-66 at home.
