Israeli Cup Quarterfinals, 2nd leg: October 29, 2006
Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv cruised into the Israeli State Cup quarterfinals with an 89-67 win over Ironi Ashkelon on Sunday at Nokia Arena. Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem also advanced on Thursday, despite a loss in its second-leg game. The cup holders from Tel Aviv are joined by Ironi Nahariya, which advanced despite a second-leg loss to Galil Elyon-Golan 83-79; Afula/Gilboa, which eliminated Hapoel Tel Aviv with a 104-84 win; Bnei Hasharon, which ousted Hod Hasharon 96-62; and Ironi Ramat Gan, which beat Givataim 106-77. Yoqneam/Megido is the only team from the National League to qualify to the final eight after a 93-80 win over Kiryat Ata. The game between Givat Shmuel and Natzrat Elite was postponed. The Israeli League season begins next Sunday with a clash between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Jerusalem.
Maccabi, which thrashed Ashkelon in the first leg 72-111, had no problem on Sunday. Maccabi finished the first quarter up 26-14 and remained on top 43-32 at halftime. Tel Aviv continued to dominate despite Will Bynum fouling out and Jaime Arnold leavin with an injury during the third period. Derrick Sharp and Lior Eliyahu had 15 points each, Arnold scored 14 until the injury and Rodney Buford scored all his 12 points in the first half. Marcus Hatten led Ashkelon with 26 points. Jerusalem lost 71-61 to Rishon Lezion on the second leg, but advanced to to a 34-point win in last week's opener. Hapoel finished the first quarter leading 17-21, but fell behind 37-33 by halftime despite Mario Austin's 12 points. Rishon tried to use full-court pressure in an effort to close the aggregate gap, but Hapoel continued to score to book its spot in the next round. Austin finished with 24 for Hapoel, while and Tamar Slay added 13. Reggie Moore led Rishon with 15 points.
