Spanish League, Game 7: November 4-5, 2006
Nothing changed atop the Spanish League standings, as Real Madrid and Tau Ceramica won their respective games and stay atop the standings, each with a 7-0 record and two wins everyone else. Tau showed its full power to beat Winterthur FCB 86-99 in Barcelona on Saturday. It was Tau's fourth straight win at Palau Blaugrana. Igor Rakocevic fired in 6 of 9 triples on his way to score 28 points while Luis Scola added 17 for Tau. Meanwhile, Madrid downed Polaris World CB Murcia 80-70 at home on Sunday. Charles Smith had 15 points to lead 5 Madrid players in double digits. Gran Canaria needed overtime to edge Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 90-94 on the road and improve to 3-4. Marcus Norris led the way with 20 points. Unicaja overcame a 0-25 run to beat Grupo Capitol Valladolid 83-70 in Malaga on Sunday morning. Pepe Sanchez led the winners with 18 points, scoring three decisive triples down the stretch. DKV Joventut dropped to 4-3 due to a 71-78 home loss against Caja San Fernando. In other games, C.B. Granada overwhelmed Etosa Alicante 100-68, Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada topped ViveMenorca 74-66, MMT Estudiantes edged Bruesa GBC 60-69 while Pamesa Valencia beat Akasvayu Girona 79-77.
Tau Ceramica sent a message which echoed all around the Spanish League by beating Winterthur FCB 86-99 on Saturday. Tau stays unbeaten with a 7-0 record while Barcelona dropped to 3-4. Rakocevic fired in 6 of 9 triples on his way to score 28 points. Scola added 17 points, Pablo Prigioni had 14 while Zoran Planinic popped 13 for Tau. Michalis Kakiouzis had 21 points on 10-for-13 shooting for Barcelona while Mario Kasun added 16. Both teams were tied at 49-49 at the end of of an exciting first half, but Tau improved its defense right after the break. Rakocevic, Scola and Kaya Peker fueled a 2-10 run which gave Tau a 58-69 edge, while a three-pointer by Fred House made it a 12-point game, 63-75, after 30 minutes. A triple by Kakiouzis brought the hosts within 71-78, but Prigioni, Rakocevic and Mirza Teletovic stroke from downtown to seal the outcome. Unicaja improved to 3-4 by beating Grupo Capitol Valladolid 83-70 in Malaga on Sunday morning. Pepe Sanchez led the winners with 18 points, Daniel Santiago added 17 and Jiri Welsch 11 for Unicaja. Santiago and Welsch led Unicaja to a 31-20 lead after 10 minutes, but Grupo Capitol used a mamooth 0-25 run to get a 39-45 lead midway through the third quarter. Sanchez rescued his team with 3 triples, as Unicaja got a 73-63 lead with 5 minutes to go and never looked back.
Real Madrid stayed atop the standings with a perfect 7-0 record by downing Polaris World CB Murcia 80-70 at home on Sunday. Charles Smith led the winners with 15 points, Felipe Reyes added 14, Alex Mumbru had 13, Marko Tomas 12 and Venson Hamilton 11 for Madrid, which got a 19-7 margin after 10 minutes and kept a safe lead all the way, as even when Murcia got within 60-56, Smith followed a basket with 2 triples to seal the outcome. Gran Canaria Grupo Dumas needed overtime to beat Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 90-94 on the road on Sunday. Marcus Norris led the way with 20 points. Jim Moran added 15, Victor Baldo and Kornel David each had 13, Tre Simmons popped 12 and Jackson Vroman 10 for Gran Canaria. Simmons and Norris led a 2-14 run which allowed Gran Canaria to get a 71-77 edge with 3 minutes to go. Bilbao basket did not surrender, however, as a three-pointer by Predrag Savovic sent the game to overtime, 85-85. Despite missing as many as 5 free throws in the extra period, Gran Canaria used its experience to get a well-deserved win. DKV Joventut dropped to 4-3 due to a 71-78 home loss against Caja San Fernando, which became the first Spanish team to get a road win in Badalona since January. Filip Videnov led the winners with 20 points, but former Joventut player had 7 of his 12 points to break the game in the final period. Rudy Fernandez led Joventut with 17 points, Lubos Barton added 16 on 4 of 4 three-pointers while Charles Gaines and Elmer Bennett each had 10 points for the hosts.
