Portuguese League, Game 3: November 4-5, 2006
Benfica keeps leading the Portuguese League standings with a 3-0 record by edging Queluz Sintra PM 60-58 at home on Sunday. Carlos Andrade led the winners with 14 points, Ashante Johnson added 12 and Corey Benjamin 11 for Benfica. Kalu Guasco had 17 points for Queluz, which tied it at 52-52 with 5 minutes to go and then again at 58-58 with less than 2 minutes remaining. Andrade hit the game-winning shot, as both teams went scoreless in the last 84 seconds. Jamie Kendrick missed the game-winning shot for Queluz at the buzzer. Belenenses Montepio Studio Residence registered its first win by downing Barreirense 74-90 on the road on Saturday. Cameron Echols paced the winners with 32 points, Brian Robinson added 16 and Jason Robinson 14 for Belenenses, which led 33-41 at halftime and boosted its margin to 51-69 after 30 minutes, enough to seal a well-deserved win. Porto stayed unbeaten at 2-0 by downing Lusitania Angra PM behind 40 points on 17-for-24 shooting from Larry Jon Smith. Julian Blanks added 12 while Rodrigo Mascarenhas and Nuno Marcal each had 11 for Porto. Mike Williams had 22 points for Lusitania, which led 49-47 at halftime, but nobody could stop Smith in the second half. Ovarense Aerosoles improved to 2-0 by edging Casino Figueira Ginasio 76-75 in overtime at home, in a rematch of last year's Portuguese League finals. Shawn Jackson led the winners with 19 points, Cordell Henry had 13 and Ben Reed 12 for Ovarense. Jesse Smith had 21 points for Ginasio.
