Spanish League, Game 8: November 11-12, 2006
Real Madrid is the undefeated leader after eight weeks of Spanish League play after exploding for a 111-93 home win against city rival MMT Estudiantes over the weekend. Madrid scored 29 points in each of the first three quarters as six players finished scoring in double figures, led by Charles Smith with 18 points. Madrid took over exclusive possession of first place because Tau Ceramica suffered its first loss, 99-90 at Caja San Fernando, despite 24 points from Luis Scola. DKV Joventut shares a tie for fourth place after winning in overtime, 89-92, on the road at last-placed Valladolid despite missing Rudy Fernandez. Elmer Bennett and Lubos Barton scored 20 each for Joventut. Unicaja, Winterthur FC Barcelona and Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas all won to share a tie for eighth place in the standings. Unicaja dominated Alicanta on the road, winning 59-76 behind Daniel Santiago's 21 points. Also away, Barcelona blew out ViveMenorca 61-90 with great defense and balanced offense led by 16 points from Jordi Trias. Gran Canaria's defense overwhelmed visiting Pamesa Valencia to win 79-55 as Roberto Guerra exploded for 25 points.
Before a crowd of 12,800, Real Madrid helped Joan Plaza set a Spanish League record for best start ever by a rookie head coach, 8-0. Madrid made it look easy, using an early 11-0 run to race to a 29-15 lead after one quarter. The closest that Estudiantes came after that was 34-27 early in the second, but the Madrid offense never stopped from there until the finish. Smith his 3 of Madrid's 10 triples on the night and eight of his teammates scored between 7 and 14 points, Louis Bullock's total. Kerem Tunceri and Felipe Reyes added 13 each, Alex Mumbru 12 and Ratoko Varda 10. Will McDonald led Estudiantes with 24. In losing its first game, Tau fell behind early in Seville, trailing by 28-15 after a quarter by 76-60 after three. In part thanks to Scola's 10-for-14 two-point shooting, Tau got the difference down to 89-80 in the final quarter, but no smaller. Hollis Price led Caja San Fernando with 32 points and 7 assists.
Without Fernandez, Joventut shot its way to a comeback victory in Valladolid on the strength of Bennett and Barton sharing 7 triples as the visitors finished 11-for-37 from the arc. Charles Gaines added 12 for the winners, Marcelinho Huertas 11 and Ferran Laviña 10. Carlos Cabezas returned for Unicaja after shaking off an injury expected to last longer, but it was the emergence of Santiago inside that paced the team's away victory in Alicante. The center shot 7 of 9 on two-pointers and 7 of 10 at the line. Kostas Vailieiadis added 17 off the bench, Berni Rodriguez 16 and Pepe Sanchez 11 for the winners. Barcelona ruled the middle quarters by 22-55 to win going away at next-to-last-placed Menorca. Trias continued his steady start to the season while Jaka Lakovic, Michalis Kakiouzis and Juan Carlos Navarro scored 11 points each. Gran Canaria's defense forced 24 turnovers on Pamesa to coast to a home victory in which Guerra took care of the scoring with some impressive accuracy. He hit 3 of 4 two-pointers, 5 of 6 three-pionters and 4 of 4 free throws. Jackson Vroman added 10 points for the winners.
In other results, Akasvayu Girona held onto third place with an 83-76 home win over Granada as Fernando San Emeterio put up 21 points. Fuenlabrada takes part in a four-way tie for fourth place with Joventut, Caja San Fernando and Estudiantes after stopping Bruesa 69-79 on the road as Jose Antonio Paraiso cme off the bench for 17 points. And CB Murcia topped visiting Bilbao Basket 60-51 to move into a tie for 11th place.
