Turkish League, Game 6: November 11-12, 2006
Cuneyt Erden - Efes Pilsen All eyes in Turkey saw Efes Pilsen walk away as the big winner of the Istanbul derby, handing rival Fenerbahce Ulker an 83-72 defeat in a match that was marred by a brawl. Cuneyt Erden paced the winners with 18 points, while Marcus Haislip had 17 for Efes before being ejected for fighting. The loss was Fenerbahce's first of the season and allowed Turk Telekom to move into sole possession of first place in the Turkish League with a 6-0 record. Erwin Dudley scored 14 and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead Turk Telekom over Alpella on the road 64-74. Galatasaray Cafe Crown was victorious in a derby of its own, downing Besiktas Cola Turka 60-67 behind 15 points from Darrell Mitchell. In other games, Tofas made sure that Tekel remained winless after a 57-65 road win behind 17 from Adem Oren; Damien Kinloch scored 15 points and grabbed 12 boards to lead Banvit over Darussafaka 80-61; Selcuk University was the high-scorer of the week in a 99-69 win against Pinar Karsiyaka; CASA TED Kolej dumped Beykoz 98-63 and Mersin B.B. Went on the road to beat Oyak Renault 63-66.

Nine thousand Fenerbahce fans packed Efes Pilsen's Abdi Ipekci hall for the hotly contested Istanbul derby, which will be remembered more for the blows between Haislip and Fenerbahce's Mirsad Turkcan than the final score. The fight erupted after a Damir Mrsic three-pointer late in the third quarter that brough the visiting side within 61-50. Turkcan tackled Haislip, who responded with a blow that opened a gash above Turkcan's left eyebrow. Refree Engin Kennerman ejected both players. Efes started the game in great form, punishing Fenerbahce for every defensive mistake as it built a 31-13 lead after 10 minutes. Cuneyt Erden heated up from downtown and Mustafa Abi and Haislip controlled the paint as Efes's lead grew to 47-23 late in the second period. Fenerbahce closed the gap to 51-30 at halftime. Damir Mrsic and Will Solomon got Fenerbahce going in the third period as the deficit continued to shrink. However the fight seemed to break the visiting side's momentum as Efes increased its lead to 68-53 entering the final period. Solomon took charge and his threes helped cut the lead back down to 68-63, but Fener would get no closer as Ermal Kuqo, Abi and Drew Nicholas made layups to help Efes close out the game. Erden lead Efes with 18 points, 5 assists and 5 steals, Nicholas had 15 points and 5 assists and Ermal Kurtoglu added 14 points and 9 rebounds. Mrsic led Fenerbahce with 20 points, while Solomon had 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals and Kaspars Kambala 10.

Galatasaray Cafe Crown beat Besiktas Cola Turka 60-67, handing Besiktas its second loss of the season. Galatasaray came back from 10 points down at the beginning of the second quarter to get the win. Mitchell led the way with 15 points, Fatih Solak added 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks and young forward Murat Kaya had 11 points and 3 steals in a key role. Burak Sezgin also scored two straight three-pointers to help close the difference when the score was 24-14. Brooks Sales led Besiktas with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Cevher Ozer had 10 points and Aubrey Reese 9 points and 8 rebounds.
