Israeli League, Game 2, November 11-12, 2006
Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv defeated Elitzur Ashkelon on the road by 20 points Monday to remain undefeated after two rounds of action in the Israeli League. Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem was also an away winner in its game on Sunday. Both teams struggled early before making late pushes to earn the expected wins. Rodney Bufors led Maccabi with 24 points and Will Bynum added 18 points and 5 assists for the perennial champs. Jerusalem forward Matan Naor made 9-of-12 three-pointers on the way to career-high 27 points, while Timmy Bowers shined with 29 points and 7 assists as Hapoel overcame newcomers Afula/Gilboa 87-96. In other action around the league, Sasa Bratic scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Galil Elyon, which got its first win of the season at Maccabi Givat Shmuel 87-97. Bnei Hasharon rode Lee Nailon's 40-point performance to a 106-93 victory over Rishon Lezion and Ironi Nahariya defeated Ramat Gan 94-74 behind 23 points and 9 boards from Ido Kozikaro.
Maccabi struggled in the opening minutes and managed only a 10-12 lead halfway through the first quarter. Five straight Maccabi turnovers late in the period helped Ashkelon remain close at 20-23 after 10 minutes. Ashkelon's lone foreign player for this game, heated up for 16 first-half points, enough to keep the home team in the game until halftime. Or Eitan made it 35-37 with two minutes to play in the half before Buford sank his second three-pointer. The the hosts tied the game at 41 heading into the locker rooms. Nikola Vujcic made his first appearance in the third quarter, but still Ashkelon took a 45-42 lead. Maccabi switched to a full-court press and soon took the lead back. Triples by Bynum and Sharon Shason allowed Maccabi to finish the third quarter up 70-63 and when Buford joined the club and Vujcic dominated the paint, Maccabi climbed to 67-80 early in the fourth. From that on it was a three-point shoot out for Maccabi as Buford, Bynum, Shason and Derrick Sharp hit from behind the arc to shut down the game on the way to a 76-96 road win. Buford led Maccabi with 24 points, Bynum added 18 and Yotam Halperin and Vujcic added 9 each. Marcus Hatten led Ashkelon with 24 points and Mushon Ya'akusi added 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Hapoel traveled to a tough road game and celebrated on the way home after an 87-96 win over Afula/Gilboa. The newcomer gave Hapoel a hard time and already after six minutes led 24-9, on the way to a 32-20 lead at the end of the first quarter. Hapoel made a 0-8 run early in the second to recover and by halftime held a 47-51 lead. Naor, who made five triples in the first half, remained hot and whenever the locals got close, he made sure Hapoel will stay safely in front. Entering the final period Hapoel held a 72-74, but 4 quick Afula/Gilboa points changed that. However Bowers answered with 4 points and Naor added two more hits from behind the arc to lead Jerusalem to its first win. Bowers led Hapoel with 29 points and 7 assists, Naor tallied 27 points, Guy Pnini added 12 points while Dror Hagag and Mario Austin scored 10 each. Jermaine Hall led Afula/Gilboa with 26 points and Guni Izraeli added a career-high with 21 points and 6 assists.
