Adriatic League, Game 10: November 18-19, 2006
The 10th week of the Adriatic League lived a big upset when Buducnost outlasted leader Partizan at home on Saturday by 73-68, therefore allowing Cibona to become the new leader of the competition thanks to a new win by 85-98 at Split also on Saturday and an 8-2 record. Also an 8-2 record is held by second placer FMP who defeated Hemofarm at home in a ULEB Cup duel by 85-80. Crvena Zvezda also got rid of Union Olimpija at home by a solid 110-92 behind another huge performance by Milan Gurovic with 36 points, right after having scored 35 in the ULEB Cup to become the Week 3 MVP. Zvezda is now seventh with a 5-5 record while Olimpija is ninth with a 4-6. Partizan drops to 7-3 for third place while Hemofarm is fourth also with a 7-3.
Crvena Zvezda pulled an important win thanks to Milan Gurovic, who is totally on fire. After a huge performance in the ULEB Cup with 35 points that earned him the Week 3 MVP, he scored 36 to lead the team to a 110-92 home win over Union Olimpija. Gurovic had 8 of 11 two-point shots and 11 of 12 free throws for an index rating of 37. He was helped by Petar Popovic's 21 points, Billy Thomas' 20 and Pero Antic's 15. For Union Olimpija, Manuchar Markoishvili had 27, Marko Milic 16, Sandi Cebular 14, Ivica Jurkovic 11 and Saulius Kuzminskas 10. Zvezda blasted Olimpija in the first quarter with a 30-18 partial. After that, Union Olimpija recovered in offense, but the hosts maintained a 67% from the field to move ahead and also won the last period with a 29-22 to seal things off. Olimpija's 7 of 24 triples were no match for Zvezda's 9 of 22, despite leading the rebounds by 24-31. In another hot clash between ULEB Cup teams, FMP outlasted Hemofarm at home by 85-80. Branko Cvetkovic led the winners with his 20 points, Dragan Labovic and Aleksandar Rasic posted 13 apiece and Slobodan Popovic nailed 10 for FMP. Hemofarm had in Vladan Vukosavljevic its best man with 19 points, Nebojsa Joksimovic and Stefan Markovic posted 15 each and Milos Borisov helped with 11. FMP won the rebounding battle 27-21, and after 10 minutes, the score was already 29-13. Defenses grew stronger in the second period as the teams were kept at an 11-13 partial score for a 40-26 halftime score. The last two quarters would also be for Hemofarm as Markovic led the offense of the guests for a 40-33 score in minute 22. Vukosavljevic's dunk even made it 67-66 for FMP in minute 35, but triples by Popovic and Milos Teodosic ended with Hemofarm's dream of winning at FMP.
A 85-98 win at Split CO, allowed Cibona to become the new leader of the competition. Luksa Andric and Barisa Krasic scored 17 points apiece to lead the winners, Davor Kus added 13 and Jurica Zuza had 10. The guests never got huge leads in the score, but maintained a steady rhythm towards victory. At the halftime break, Cibona was already leading by 10 points, 43-53. The lead moved around the 10 points in the third quarter as every time that Split managed to trim the deficit a little, an isolated play by Cibona would erase it all, and after 30 minutes the score was 64-77. Nothing changed in the last period, and Cibona even got a 23-point lead at 70-93 after Krasic's triple but then the guests relaxed, and Split managed to make the scoreboard look better. Meanwhile, in Podgorica, Buducnost handed Partizan the upset of the week with a home win by 73-68. Goran Jeretin's 19 points led the hosts to the win despite their 11 missed free throws. Only Kosta Perovic reached double digits of scoring for Partizan as he racked up 11 points. A mostly defensive game started slow when the score shoed a 14-16 after 10 minutes. The second quarter made the difference because Buducnost took it by 22-14 and Partizan always trailed from then on. Luka Bogdanovic's triple made it a 2-point game in minute 29, 52-50, but five straight points by Jeretin allowed Buducnost to breathe at 59-50 in minute 32, and the hosts maintained the leads until the final buzzer.
In other games of Week 10, Bosna ASA defeated Helios Domzale at home by 99-93; Siroki was a road winner at Geoplin Slovan by 80-86 and in the only game played on Sunday, a Croatian derby between hosting Zagreb and Zadar fell for the guests' side by 86-89 behind Carl English's 32 points thanks to 5 of 8 triples.
