Turkish League, Game 8: November 25-26, 2006
A shorthanded Fenerbahce Ulker was too much for CASA TED Kolejliler of Ankara this week, scoring a 19-point win to remain one game back of undefeated Turk Telekom in the Turkish League on Sunday. Despite playing without the injured Will Solomon and suspended Mirsad Turkcan, Fenerbahce got 22 points from Damir Mrsic to improve to 7-1 in the table. Efes Pilsen cruised to a 66-88 road win at Oyak Renault to remain tied for third place in the league. Drew Nicholas led the way with 14 points and Kerem Gonlum added a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Turk Telekom took advantage off Beskitas's injury problems to improve to 8-0. Derrick Alston scored 15 as the league leaders won 60-68. Galatasaray Cafe Crown improved to 6-2 with a 71-56 win over Pinar Karsiyaka behind Murat Kaya's 18 points. In other games, Banvit kept Tekel winless with an 84-58 victory, Darussafaka overran Tofas 75–50, Beykoz topped Mersin B.B. 82-69 and Selcuk University defeated Alpella 75–67.
Fenerbahce Ulker had little trouble against CASA TED Kolejliler to improve to 7-1. The visiting team was without the injured Will Solomon and suspended Mirsad Turkcan. Fenerbahce fell behind by as many as 11 points in the first quarter, but recovered immediately in the second quarter. Tiny Marques Green and Erek Jay Hansen scored most of the home points in the opening quarter, which CASA TED lead 26 – 16. It wasn't until midway through the second quarter that Fenerbahce’s zone defense changed things. Omer Onan, Oguz Savas and Rasim Basak scored one after another to build a 0–13 run that put Fenerbahce on top 39–42 by halftime. In the third quarter, Ibrahim Kutluay and Ira Clark points extended the lead to 54–61. Man of the match Mrsic’s three-pointers were too much for CASA TED to handle once Hansen fouled out at the beginning of the fourth quarter, as Fenerbahce cruised to a comfortable 66–85 win. Mrsic finished with 22 points, Kutluay added 16, Savas 14 and Clark 11. Davis led the hosts with 18, Green had 14 and Hansen finished with 13 for TED Kolej.
Efes Pilsen had one of its easiest victories of the season on the road at Oyak Renault of Bursa 66–88. The visitors doubled the score just in the first quarter (14 – 28) with a quick passing game and some Nicholas three pointers. The visitors extended the lead minute by minute until 31-53 at halftime and 43–70 at the end of the third quarter. The efforts of the home team in the second half by Charles Bennett and Ozgur Biyik were not enough for the home team as Efes won 66–88. Nicholas led the way with 14 points, Gonlum had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Ermal Quqo also added 12 for Efes and young center Emre Bayav recorded a season-high 11. Evren Buker led Oyak with 18. Besiktas Cola Turka was without the injured Baris Ozcan and Jamel Thomas, but still made things difficult for Turk Telekom by coming back from a 15-point deficit. Still, Turk Telekom held on for a 60-68 win. Center Jan Hendrik Jagla’s three straight three-pointers at the beginning of the third quarter made the score 27–42 for the visitors, after they held a 19–29 halftime lead. But then, Aubrey Reese ignited a 17-0 run to give Besiktas its first lead (47–45). The hosts led by 1 point entering the last quarter, but Alston was the difference in the game down the stretch. He scored consecutive free throws and layups in the last two minutes of the game to bring Telekom the 60–68 victory. Alston had 15 points plus 7 rebounds, while Erwin Dudley had 13 and Jagla scored 11. Reese scored 28 for Besiktas and Erkan Veyseloglu had 10.
