Italian League, Game 9: November 25-26, 2006
Montepaschi Siena took down VidiVici Bologna 90-83 Sunday to take sole possession of first place in the Italian League. Siena's starting backcourt of Terrell McIntyre and Joseph Forte combined for 44 points on 7-of-10 three-point shooting and 5 assists as the team improved to 8-1. VidiVici, which fell into a second-place tie with Armani Jeans Milano, dropped to 7-2 after starting the day tied with Montepaschi for first. Milano got 16 points and 9 rebounds from Joseph Blair as it topped Pallacanestro Cantu 77-62. Benetton Treviso was down 11 midway through the fourth quarter, but stormed back to top Lottomatica Roma 66-67. Whirlpool Varese got 20 points and 11 rebounds from Delonte Holland to score a 78-83 road win at Eldo Napoli. David Bluthenthal scored 26 to lead Climamio Bologna over Legea Scafati 92-82. Snaidero Udine cruised past Bipop Carire Regio Emilia 94-74. In other games, Ramel Curry scored 30 to lead Air Avellino past Siviglia Wear Teramo 95-75; Upea Capo d'Orlando got 30 from Alvin Young to beat Angelico Biella 85-77; and TDShop.it Livorno went on the road to earn its second win at the expense of Premiata Montegranaro, 81-86.
In a clash of league-leaders, Siena led by double figures in the first period, but VidVicic stormed back and Brett Blizzard and Bennett Davison led the visitors back on top early in the third. The fourth quarter saw four lead changes and two ties before McIntyre took over with 11 points during a 13-1 run that put the game away. McIntyre scored 24, Forte 20, Rimantas Kaukenas 15, Romain Sato 12 and Ben Eze had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Travis Best had 15 points and 8 assists for VidiVici, while Guilherme Giovannoni chipped in 15 and Dusan Vukcevic 14. Lottomatica took a 37-28 second-period lead after four Dejan Bodiroga free throws, but Benetton trimmed the gap to 38-32 at halftime. Ognjen Askrabic played a big role in a 12-0 Roma run in the third quarter, which stood up until the middle of the fourth quarter. However, Benetton never quit and used a well-balanced team-effort to come back once more. After Vlado Ilievski made it 66-60 with a minute left, the hosts didn't score again and Benetton got a triple from Matteo Soragna and then free trows from Angelo Gigli and Soragna to complete an improbable comeback and take over fourth place in the standings. Terrel Lyday led Benetton with 19, while Nikos Zisis had 12 points and 6 assists and Gigli added 12 points and 8 rebounds. Bodiroga led Roma with 14 and Askrabic added 10.
Climamio used an 8-0 surge to take a promising lead late in the second quarter, but Dimitri Lauwers of Scafati was instrumental in cutting it back to 40-37 at halftime. Bluthenthal and Tyus Edney played the biggest roles as the hosts built a double-figure lead in the third and Scafati never got closer than 7 the rest of the way. Bluthenthak made 8-of-11 two-pointers on his way to 26, while James Thomas posted a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds. Marco Belineli and Tyus Edney added 15 each. Jack Martinez scored 21 and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Scafati, while Goran Jagodnik scored 16 in his second game with the club. Varese held Napoli to 11 points in each of the first two quarters while building a 22-37 halftime lead. After Giacomo Galanda's three made it 42-60 on the first play of the fourth quarter, Tierre Brown sparked a 7-0 spurt to get the hosts going. Eventually Alessandro Cittadini cut the gap to 3 points with a minute left, but Aleksandar Capin and Keith Carter were perfect from the line down the stretch to seal the win. Carter finished with 22 and Holland 20 for Varese, while Capin added 13 and Rolando Howell 11. Brown led Napoli with 21 points and 8 assists, Ansu Sesay and Michel Morandais added 13 each, Cittadini 12 and Richard Rocca 10. Regio Emilia started the game against Udine on a 0-12 run and held a 15-20 lead after 10 minutes, but Snaidero scored 30 in the second quarter to take control for good. Udine then held Regio Emilia to 7 third-quarter points to make the last 10 minutes garbage time. Joel Zacchetti led Udine with 17, Damon Williams had 16 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists, Patrick Mutombo 15, Andrew Wisniewski 13 points and 5 dishes and Jacob Jaacks 12.
