Israeli League, Game 4: November 26-27, 2006
Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv is still perfect after four weeks in the Israeli League thanks to its latest victory, a 110-77 blowout over Givat Shmuel. Sharon Shason came off the Maccabi bench to lead the winners with 20 points. Six of his teammates also scored in double figures even though Maccabi rested two starters. Undefeated defending champion Maccabi remains tied for first place with Ironi Nahariya, which smashed Rishon LeZion 114-70 to keep its record perfect, too. Maccabi hosts Nahariya next week at Nokia Arena. Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem, on the other hand, not only suffered another loss, this time on the road by 96-88 to Bnei HaSharon, but saw starter and recent team leader Matan Naor injured. In other results, both Ashkelon and Ramat Gan found their first victories of the season in dramatic fashion. Ramat Gan beat Galil Elyon at home 116-114 after overtime, while Ashkelon needed a buzzer-beater three-point shot by Or Eitan to beat Afula/Gilboa 79-80 on the road.
Maccabi enjoyed an easy game despite resting Nikola Vujcic and Rodney Buford, who didn't take off their warmup clothes. Yotam Halperin helped push Maccabi in front by 22-9, and by the end of the first quarter the locals were up 31-14. Givat used some turnovers by Maccabi to cut the difference to 5 points later, but by halftime Maccabi had climbed again to a double-digit margin, 48-37. Shason came off the bench to score 5 points in a row as Maccabi took an 18.point lead, and after Noel Felix joined the game, Maccabi increased the gap to 77-54 entering the last quarter. Felix collected 10 points, including a three-pointer, and along with Shason led Maccabi to a 33-point win. In addition to Shason, six other Maccabi players scored in double digits. Yaniv Green had 17 points and 7 rebounds. Will Bynum, Halperin, Simas Jasaitis and Lior Eliyahu scored 12 points each and Felix had a total of 10 in 11 minutes. Jason Straight scored 21 for Givat, and Moshe Brener had 19.
Hapoel suffered its second league loss, once again on the road, with a 96-88 defeat against Bnei HaSharon. Dan Shamir's team lost Matan Naor for a shoulder injury already in the first minutes of the game, but still hoped to recover from the home loss to Oostende last Tuesday in the ULEB Cup. Hapoel was strong in the game for more than three quarters, but a great finish by Bnei set an eight point different at the buzzer. The Israeli players of Hapoel, joined by Mario Austin, led Hapoel to a 24-24 tie at the end of the first quarter, and later on a 44-46 lead at half time. After another tied quarter, 19-19, the teams entered the deciding one with Hapoel holding a 65-67 lead. Scott Greenman with two great long range three pointers in the last quarter, joined the unstoppable Lee Nailon, and that was too much for Hapoel who received 33 points in the last 10 minutes, on the way to another disappointing home loss. Meir Tapiro led Hapoel with 18 points, Austin added 17, Dror Hagag had a great game with 16 points, Erez Markovic scored 12 and Guy Pnini, who played for Bnei his entire senior career, added 11. Ed Cota played only 5 minutes and was scoreless, and Jurica Golemac scored only 3 points in his 9 minutes on court. Nailon led Bnei with 27 points and six assists, Ousmane Cisse added 15 points, Moshe Mizrakhi scored 13 and Greenman finished with 10 points.
