German League, Game 12: December 2-3, 2006
Chris Owens Alba Berlin Alba Berlin took the big showdown in the German League this weekend and keeps tying for the first place at 10-1 by downing Brose Baskets 71-59 at home in front of 7,380 fans on Saturday night. Chris Owens led the winners with 16 points, Will Avery added 13 while Sharrod Ford posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for Alba. Darren Fenn had 13 points for Brose Baskets, DeJuan Collins and Zelly Wesson each added 12 while Derrick Zimmerman 11 for the guests, who dropped to 6-3. Wesson added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Julius Jenkins and Owens led Alba to a 37-30 lead, but Brose Baskets got within 38-36 at halftime and even got a 48-49 edge midway through the third quarter. Nenad Canak hit 3 triples in a 11-1 run which gave Alba a 59-50 lead early in the final period. The guests rallied within 59-57 but Owens stepped up to make Alba get a 67-57 margin and never look back. RheinEnergie stays third at 9-2 by topping Telekom Baskets Bonn 67-78 on the road. Aleksandar Nadjfeji led the winners with 19 points on 8-for-8 shooting, Immanuel McElroy added 16, Demond Mallet had 11 while Marcin Gortat posted a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds for RheinEnergie, which broke the game after the break. Gortat, McElroy and an outstanding Nadjfeji helped RheinEnergie to get a 13-point lead, 49-62, after three quarters. In other games, New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig beat Paderborn Baskets 76-66, EnBW Ludwigsburg thrashed Sellbytel Baskets Nurnberg 82-63, TBB Trier topped Eisbaren Bremerhaven 76-84, the Artland Dragons defeated Walter Tigers Tubingen 87-74, EWE Baskets Oldenburg edged Bayer Giants Leverkusen 87-94 while the Deutsche Bank Skyliners got a 67-73 road win against the Giessen 46ers.
