Portuguese League, Game 9: December 2-3, 2006
Ovarense Aerosoles and Porto Ferpinta share the top spot at the Portuguese League standings each with a 7-1 record. Ovarense beat Benfica 84-69 in the biggest showdown of the week on Sunday. Cordell Henry led the winners with 31 points off the bench while Corey Benjamin had 19 for Benfica. Ovarense led 43-28 at halftime and even when Besiktas got within 59-52 after 30 minutes, the hosts controlled the game in the final period to add an important win. Meanwhile, Porto beat Queluz Sintra Patrimonio Mundial 79-84 on the road. Nuno Marcal led the way with 22 points while Rob Kampman had 26 points for Queluz, which rallied from a nine-point deficit in the final period to get within 79-80 with 54 seconds to go. Paulo Cunha hit 4 of 4 free throws to make Porto win the game. Lusitania Angra Patrimonio Mundial stays fourth at 6-3 by rallying to beat Ginasio 61-62 on the road. Joao Figueiredo led the winners with 19 points. Lusitania trailed 49-32 midway through the third quarter, but Graham Brown hit the game-winning free throws with 20 seconds to go. CAB Madeira improved to 3-5 by edging Belenenses Hyundai Lusifor 71-76 on the road on Sunday. Filipe da Silva paced the winners with 21 points. Both teams were tied at 71-71 with 2 minutes to go, but B.J. Puckett hit a critical triple while da Silva added a fast break basket to seal the outcome.
