Turkish League, Game 10: December 9-10, 2006
There were no changes atop the Turkish League this weekend, as the top three teams all won. The biggest game took place in Istanbul, where Efes Pilsen defeated city rivals Galatasaray Cafe Crown 60-74 on the road, improving to 8-2. Kerem Gonlum shined with a double-double as last season's finalists remained two games back of undefeated league-leader Turk Telekom, which took down Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi 59-71. Erwin Dudley led Telekom with 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Derrick Alston added 19 points and 10 boards. Fenerbahce Ulker, without the suspended Mirsad Turkcan and injured Willie Solomon and Kaspars Kambala, still trashed Beykoz on the road 47-87, behind 17 each from Omer Onan and Ibrahim Kutluay. Besiktas Cola Turka had little trouble topping winless Tekelspor 80-64. In other games, Marques Green had 24 points, 11 assists and 5 steals to carry CASA TED Kolejliler past Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 80-68; Marcus Slaughter came through with 17 points and 13 rebounds as Pinar Karsiyaka defeated Tofas 82-75; Banvit was a 59-69 winner at Oyak Renault and Darussafaka downed Alpella 82-54.
Efes started slowly, conceding 25 points in the first quarter alone. A Gerald Fitch three-pointer gave the hosts an early 9-2 lead on the way to a 25-21 first period. However, Efes got a thunderous start to the second quarter, using 2-15 run to take the lead for good. Nikola Prkacin's layup gave Efes its first lead (27-28) and when Cenk Akyol capped the run with a three-pointer, the scoreboard showed 27-36. Efes was unstoppable for the rest of the quarter, taking a 29-41 lead into the dressing rooms. Galatasaray's zone defense slowed Efes a bit in the third period, as Burak Sezgin's points cut the gap to 46-55 after 30 minutes. Back-to-back Sezgin threes followed by another three from Fitch helped Galatasaray close to within 58-61 midway throughout the fourth quarter, but Efes responded with a 0-10 run to seal the outcome. Horace Jenkins points and a Cuneyt Erden triple finished things as the visitors strolled to the 60-74 victory. Gonlum finished the game with an impressive double-double made up of 18 points and 14 rebounds as well as 4 steals. Drew Nicholas added 13 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists, Erden had 11 points and 4 assists and both Prkacin and Jenkins finished with 10 each for Efes, which rested power forward Marcus Haislip. Fitch led Galatasaray with 16 points, while Fatih Solak posted 12 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks, Sezgin had 12 points and 6 rebounds and Darrell Mitchel chipped in 11 in defeat for Galatasaray, which played the game without its fans due to a two-match ban.
A shorthanded Fenerbahce led from start to finish in a blowout win at Beykoz, 47-87. Even without the suspended Turkcan and injured Solomon and Kambala, Fener saw 10 different players score as it improved to 9-1. Fenerbahce Onan and Kutluay had 17 points each, Damir Mrsic scored 14, Ira Clark added 10 points and 6 rebounds, Rasim Basak had 9 points, 9 boards and 6 steals, and newcomer Eddie Basden contributed 8 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Mutlu Demir and Phillip Goss scored 14 points apiece for Beykoz. Besiktas Cola Turka had little trouble topping winless Tekelspor 80-64. The hosts dominated inside, outrebounding Tekel 39-19 and cruising despite star point guard Aubrey Reese playing less than 6 minutes. Djuro Ostojic led Besiktas with 17 points and 9 rebounds, while Cevher Ozer and Erkan Veyseloglu both posted 15 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon McKnight was a one-man show for Tekel with 27 points.
