Spanish League, Game 12: December 9-10, 2006
Everything stays the same atop the Spanish League standings, as Real Madrid got its 12th win in as many games by beating Bruesa GBC 71-89 on the road on Sunday. Louis Bullock had 18 of his 29 points in the final 5 minutes of the third quarter, in which Madrid broke the game for good. Tau Ceramica stays second at 11-1 by downing Grupo Capitol Valladolid 65-86 on the road behind 22 points from Igor Rakocevic, but lost Zoran Planinic for the next three weeks due to a leg injury. Unicaja provided the comeback of the week by rallying from a 16-point deficit to beat Winterthur FC Barcelona 80-77. Carlos Cabezas led the winners with 21 points while Jaka Lakovic added 22 for Barcelona. Rudy Fernandez exploded for 36 points on 14-for-19 shooting to make DKV Joventut beat Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 83-71 in Badalona while Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas dropped to 5-7 due to a 91-70 road loss against Akasvayu Girona. In other games, Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket egded Caja San Fernando 85-84, Pamesa Valencia topped MMT Estudiantes 69-75, Polaris World CB Murcia beat Etosa Alicante 56-58 while CB Granada bested ViveMenorca 73-64.
Unicaja rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat Winterthur FC Barcelona 80-77 and improve to 6-6 in the standings. Carlos Cabezas paced the winners with 21 points, Daniel Santiago added 20 while Carlos Jimenez posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for Unicaja. Jaka Lakovic had 22 points for Barcelona, Mario Jasun 16 and Juan Carlos Navarro 14 for the guests, who dropped to 5-7. Everything seemed to roll early for Barcelona, as a buzzer-beating layup by Michalis Kakiouzis gave Barcelona a 30-43 halftime margin, while Rodrigo De La Fuente buried a jumper to make it a 16-point game, 36-52. Cabezas, Jimenez and Santiago combined for all points in a 16-0 run which tied it at 52-52 late in the third quarter. The game went down to the wire, as Kakiouzis had 3 free throws with a 78-75 score. He made his first attempt, missed the second and accidentally made the third with just 2 seconds to go. Berni Rodriguez did not miss in the other end to seal the win. Tau Ceramica improved to 11-1 by downing Grupo Capitol Valladolid 65-86 on the road. Igor Rakocevic led the winners with 22 points, Serkan Erdogan added 16, Tiago Splitter had 13, Kaya Peker 12 and Zoran Planinic 10 before leaving the game with a leg injury. Peker, Rakocevic and Planinic led Tau to a 15-29 lead after 10 minutes. Tau boosted its margin to 33-51 at halftime and then again to 33-65 midway through the third quarter, enough to seal the win.
Real Madrid stays undefeated at 12-0 by downing Bruesa GBC 71-89 on the road on Sunday. Bullock led the winners with 29 points, Charles Smith added 13, Felipe Reyes had 11 and Alex Mumbru 10. Madrid had a slim 45-48 lead after 24 minutes until Bullock decided he had enough. He had 18 points in less than 6 minutes to boost Madrid's lead to 53-71 after three quarters, and even when Bruesa opened the final period with a 10-0 run, Smith and Bullock shined in crunch time to make the guests add yet another road win. Joventut improved to 7-5 by downing Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 83-71 in Badalona. Rudy Fernandez paced the winners with 36 points on 14-for-19 shooting, including 7 triples. Charles Gaines posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds for Joventut, which trailed 34-37 at halftime. Elmer Bennett and an outstanding Fernandez allowed Joventut to get a 62-50 lead after 30 minutes. Fernandez and Dmitry Flis combined for 5 triples in the final period to make Joventut add a confortable win. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas dropped to 5-7 due to a 91-70 road loss against Akasvayu Girona on Sunday morning. Fernando San Emeterio led the winners with 19 points. Jackson Vroman had 16 points for Gran Canaria, which stayed in the game for a 26 minutes, as a basket by Kornel David brought the guests within 48-44. A 16-5 run allowed Girona to break the game open and add its ninth win in 12 games.
