Benfica improved to 7-3 by beating Belenenses Montepio SR 81-74 in Lisbon on Sunday. Ian Stanback led the winners with 18 points while Carlos Andrade and Corey Benjamin each had 16 for Benfica. Jason Robinson had 18 points for Belenenses, which got within 60-57 with 7 minutes to go. A 9-2 run allowed Benfica to keep a safe lead untilthe final buzzer. Queluz Sintra PM needed overtime to edge Lusitania Angra PM 87-88 on the road on Saturday and improve to 4-6 in the standings. Rob Kampman led the winners with 24 points, Carlos Seixas added 22 while Ike Nwankwo posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds for Queluz. Graham Brown had 25 points for Lusitania, which led 48-34 at halftime. Brown and an aggressive zone defense allowed Queluz to rally and send the game to overtime, 75-75. Seixas proved to be decisive, as his free throws allowed Queluz to win the game down the stretch. Barreirense improved to 3-7 by edging Casino Figueira Ginasio 63-58 at home behind 18 points from Joao Santos and 23 boards from Dusan Macura. Last but not least, CAB Madeira edged Porto Ferpinta 87-83 at home. Eric Sandrin and Filipe da Silva each had 23 points for the winners, while Nuno Marcal led Porto with 28 points. Madeira allowed Ovarense Aerosoles, who did not play this week, to lead the standings now at 8-1.
