Spanish League, Game 13: December 16-17, 2006
Everything stays the same atop the Spanish League standings, as Real Madrid stays atop the league board for yet another week. Madrid got its 13th win in as many games by thrashing Etosa Alicante 77-58 at home on Sunday morning. Felipe Reyes led the winners with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Tau Ceramica stays second at 12-1 by edging Adecco Estudiantes 73-70 in Vitoria on Saturday. Pablo Prigioni led the way with 21 points, including 4 of 4 free throws in the final seconds to hold off a late Estudiantes rally and add another win. Akasvayu Girona is third with a 10-3 record by downing Caja San Fernando 69-87 in Seville on Sunday. Meanwhile, Winterthur FC Barcelona improved to 6-7 and keeps fighting to make it to the Spanish King's Cup final eight by edging Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 78-72 at home on Sunday. Juan Carlos Navarro paced the winners with 32 points, including in a late 9-0 run which sealed the outcome down the stretch. Gran Canaria also improved to 6-7 by downing DKV Joventut 89-75 at home on Sunday. Jackson Vroman paced Gran Canaria with 25 points while Rudy Fernandez added 26 for Joventut. In other games, Polaris World CB Murcia overwhelmed CB Granada 93-63, ViveMenorca topped Bruesa GBC 76-55 while Pamesa Valencia thrashed Grupo Capitol Valladolid 79-61.
Real Madrid stayed undefeated and improved to 13-0 in the standings by thrashing Etosa Alicante 77-58 at home on Sunday morning. Reyes led the winners with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Mumbru and Charles Smith each had 12 points while Louis Bullock added 11 for Real Madrid, which trailed 15-21 after 10 minutes. Reyes, Smith and Mumbru allowed Madrid to rally and get a 35-34 edge at halftime. Real Madrid used a 16-0 run which Reyes capped with free throws to break the game open, 60-44, early in the final period and never looked back. Tau Ceramica stays second at 12-1 by edging Adecco Estudiantes 73-70 in Vitoria on Saturday. Prigioni led the way with 21 points, Serkan Erdogan added 14 while Kaya Peker and Luis Scola each had 11 for Tau, which trailed all the way in the first half and got within 33-36 at the break. Estudiantes still kept a 51-53 edge early in the final period, but Fred House, Prigioni and Scola fueled a 16-1 run which seemed to seal the win, 67-54, with 5 minutes to go. Estudiantes rallied and got within 69-68 already in the final minute, but Prigioni hit 4 of 4 free throws while Pancho Jasen missed a game-tying three-point shot which went in and out. Unicaja dropped to 6-7 due to a 76-70 road loss against Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada. Andres Miso led the winners with 17 points. Carlos Cabezas had 18 points for Unicaja while Jiri Welsch added 11. Unicaja trailed most of the way and even when a three-pointer by Welsch got the guests within 57-55, an outstanding Virgijilus Praskevicius allowed Fuenlabrada to win the game.
Winterthur FCB improved to 6-7 by edging Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 78-72 at home on Sunday. Navarro paced the winners with 32 points on 7 of 11 two-pointers and 3 of 6 triples. Jaka Lakovic and Gianluca Basile each had 10 points for Barcelona, which trailed 69-70 with under 2 minutes to go. Jordi Trias stepped up with a fast break upset which Navarro followed free throws, igniting a 9-0 run in which "la Bomba" had 6 points to seal the win. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas is back in the King's Cup race by downing DKV Joventut 89-75 at home on Sunday. Gran Canaria improved to 6-7 while Joventut dropped to 7-6. Jackson Vroman led the winners with 25 points on 11-for-17 shooting while Jimmie Hunter added 21 for Gran Canaria. Rudy Fernandez led Joventut with 26 points, Charles Gaines added 14 while Dimitri Flis had 11 for the guests. Hunter had 11 points in the first quarter to make Gran Canaria get a 22-17 lead after 10 minutes. Gran Canaria extended its margin to 44-38 at halftime and then again to 74-51 early in the final period, enough to seal a well-deserved win.
